In Modern English

He is from Köprü. He is the son of Ömer. After completing his studies in Amasya under the meticulous scholar (muhakkik) Hacı Ahmed Efendi of Ürgüp, he became a public teacher (ders-i âm) in Köprü and the preacher of the Orta Mosque. Having spent his life for more than thirty years teaching, giving instruction, preaching and counselling, he died in 1222 [1807-08].

He was one of the renowned scholars, a jurist, devoted to the sharia, and a pious preacher. His sons Mehmed and Abdurrahman Efendi became preachers of the Orta Mosque in his place; Mehmed Efendi died in 1241 [1825-26]. They too were among the scholars.

Köprü and the Orta Mosque

The place Hüsameddin calls "Köprü" is most likely today's Vezirköprü district of Samsun; this is our own inference, as the text gives no other name. The name Vezirköprü derives from Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, who became grand vizier in the 17th century; it is stated that a han (the Taşhan), a madrasa (the Taşmedrese), a mosque and a bridge were added to the district by Köprülü Mehmed Pasha and his family, and that the settlement had earlier been called by names such as "Gedikara" or "Gedegra". Today the Taşhan, the Taşmedrese and the Kale Mosque are counted among the Ottoman-period buildings of the district. No information was found in the sources we read on the Orta Mosque where İsmâil Efendi served as preacher.

His Teacher, Hacı Ahmed Efendi of Ürgüp

Hüsameddin calls Hacı Ahmed Efendi of Ürgüp a "muhakkik" in this entry and an "allâme" in the next, and writes that the subjects of both entries studied under him in Amasya. A study of the Amasya müderrises recorded in the Meşihat Archive in the time of Abdülhamid II notes that Amasya had more than forty madrasas; Hacı Ahmed Efendi of Ürgüp is not among the eight müderrises covered in that study. No information was found in other sources on this scholar or on his student İsmâil Efendi.
