Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'ın bendegânından olup müşârün-ileyhin evâhir-i saltanatında mîrâhûru olmuş idi.³⁹³ Mu'ahharan bi't-tefeyyüz Amasya vâlîsi olarak Amasya'da Güdül Mahallesi'nde oturmuşdur. Eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Samuk Noyin dahi Cengiz Hân'ın birâderi Temüke Ötcegin evlâdından Tagacar bin Temüke bin Nisoka Bahâdır'ın oğlu olup Kedağra (Köprü) kazâsı dâhilinde el-yevm "Samuk Alanı" demekle meşhûr olan çiftliğinde ikâmet ve buradan eyâlet-i Rûmiyye'ye nezâret eyliyordu.

Samuk Noyin, Moğol hükümdârı Mengü Ka'an mesleğinde munsif ve ehl-i İslâma mütemâyil bir kimse olduğu münâsebetle Anadolu'ya gelirken eş-Şeyh Şihâbeddîn Ömer es-Sühreverdî Hazretleri'nin hulefâsından [390] cemâlü'l-e'imme eş-Şeyh Takiyyeddîn Esen bin Satık eş-Şirvânî Hazretlerini yanına alıp Kedağra kasabasına getirmiş ve "Esen Şeyh" demekle iştihâr ederek ulemânınn merci'-i yegânesi olmuşdur.

Şu hâlden istidlâl olunarak denilebilir ki: Samuk Noyin, nâzır-ı bilâd-ı Selçûk olan Baycu Noyin gibi cebbârâne değil belki âkilâne hareket ederek bulunduğu muhît-i İslâmiyyenin ahvâl-i husûsiyyesine ri'âyet ve ulemâ-yı İslâma hürmet etmekle herkesin nazar-ı teveccühünü celb ediyor, Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay'ın dahi müdebbirâne ve mülâyimâne hareketi Samuk Noyin'in muhabbet-i mahsûsasını cezb eyliyordu.

Bu esnâda Tokat emîri Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey memleket-i Selçûkiyye nâzırı Baycu Noyin'in teveccüh ve i'timâdını pek ziyâde celb etmekle Târîh-i İbni Bîbî'de mezkûr olduğu üzere Erzincân emâreti ilâve-i me'mûriyeti olup pek ziyâde ta'ayyün ediyor, fakat Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay ile fikren muhâlif bulunuyordu.

Bütün emâretler, me'mûriyetler Baycu Noyin'in emr-i mahsûsuyla tevcîh olunuyor, erkân-ı devlet buna karşı muhık bir i'tirâza bile cür'et edemiyorlar, hulâsa Baycu Noyin'in bu gibi ahvâli ve hükûmet-i Selçûkiyye umûruna müdâhale-i şedîdesi erkân-ı devleti ve hâsseten Sultân Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev'i fevkalâde [391] bîzâr ediyor, atabeg-i saltanat Celâleddîn Karatay bir ye's-i azîm içinde 650 evâhirinde terk-i dağdağa-i hayât ediyordu.

Zâten müte'essir olan Sultân Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev, müşârün-ileyhin vefâtından te'essürü artıp Târîh-i Baybars, Zeyl-i İbni Halikân, Ikdu'l-Cümân gibi tevârîhin zabtı üzere 651'de terk-i saltanat ederek gûşe-i inzivâya çekiliyor, şehzâdeleri Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus, Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd müştereken taht-ı saltanata câlis oluyorlardı.

Bu tebeddül-i saltanat hengâmında Tokat ve Erzincân emîri Amasyalı Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey pervâne-i saltanat olarak Sultân Kılıç Arslan Hân'a tekarrüb ediyordu. 653'de Amasya kadısı Celâleddîn Abdulvehhâb bin et-Tebrîzî vefât etmekle meşâhîr-i fuzalâdan müderris-i Halîfe Alâ'eddîn Alî bin Mes'ûd el-Erzenî Amasya kadısı olmuş ve meşâhîr-i ümerâdan Şemseddîn Artuk, Bedreddîn Bülbül, Nâsıreddîn Sünbül, Necmeddîn Ferruh, İzzeddîn Gül bu zamândan i'tibâren ta'ayyün etmişlerdir.

Üç şerîk-i saltanatdan birincisi olan Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus Baycu Noyin'in harekâtından pek ziyâde müte'essir olduğu cihetle saltanat-ı Selçûkiyye'yi bunun müdâhale-i zâlimânesinden kurtarmak azmine düşüyor, lâkin birâderlerini bir türlü irzâ edemiyordu. Çünkü her birinin vezîr ve müsteşârı başka başka zevât olduğundan üç birâderin bir re'y üzerinde ittihâdı kâbil olamıyor, her biri bir tarafa çekip son söz Baycu Noyin'in irâde-i keyfiyyesine kalıyordu. [392]

654 evâ'ilinde sultân-ı münzevî Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev'in vefâtını ni'me'l-vesîle ittihâz eden Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus Hân iki birâderlerini cebren ber-taraf ederek i'lân-ı istiklâl etmekle Sultân Kılıç Arslan kendi pervânesi Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey'i Baycu Noyin'in yanına irsâl edib istiklâlini tahsîle çalışıyordu.

Hükûmet-i Selçûkiyye umûruna müdâhale için zâten âmâde olan Baycu Noyin, Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey'in mürâca'atını derhâl is'âf ederek bir kuvve-i askeriyye ile Aksarây'dan Konya üzerine hareket ve Sultân Keykâvus Hân ile harb eylediyse de münhezim ve Mu'îneddîn Pervâne esîr olup Sultân Kılıç Arslan ve Sultân Keykubâd bi'r-rızâ terk-i saltanat etmişler idi. Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus Hân bu iki birâderi ta'ayyünât-ı kâfiye ile Amasya'da ikâmetlerini tensîb ve Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey'i Harşene zindânına habs ederek istiklâlini te'mîn eyledi.

Fakat Baycu Noyin, eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Samuk Noyin ile ittihâd ve tecdîd-i kuvvet ederek ikinci def'a Konya üzerine hareket ve harb etmekle Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus bu def'a mağlûb ve sâhib-i a'zamı İzzeddîn Alî bin Muhammed er-Râzî maktûl oldukda Amasya'da mukîm olan Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan 654 şevvâlinde bi'l-istiklâl Anadolu hükümdârı ve Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba et-Tugrâ'î sâhib-i a'zam ve Nizâmeddîn el-Mansûr nâib-i saltanat ve Mu'îneddîn Süleyman pervâne-i sultânî oldu. [393]

Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Hân Amasya'dan Konya'ya gidip Baycu Noyin'in huzûruyla ikinci def'a resm-i bey'at icrâ olunduğu gün tertîb-i ziyâfet edilmişdi. Ziyâfet hitâmında nâib-i saltanat Nizâmeddîn el-Mansûr'un takdîm etdiği bir armudu Baycu Noyin yedikden sonra füc'eten vefât etmekle oğlu Bisutay Noyin bîçâre nâib-i saltanatı tesmîm ile ithâm ederek nâ-hak yere i'dâm etmiş ve emîrü's-sevâhil Şücâ'eddîn Tekûr Sinan nâib-i saltanat ve diğer Şücâ'eddîn Hâbil emîrü's-sevâhil olmuşdur.

Mengü Ka'ân, Baycu Noyin'in yerine Buyan Noyin nâmında birini memleket-i Selçûkiyye nâzırı olarak gönderiyor, Kılıç Arslan Hân bu vak'adan tevahhuş ederek Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey'i alıp te'yîd-i saltanat için Hemedân'a şark hükümdârı Hülâgu Hân nezdine 655'de gidiyor, birâderi Keykâvus Hân Kılıç Arslan'ın Konya'dan gitdiğini müte'âkib avdet edib ikinci def'a istiklâlini i'lân eylediği esnâda Kedağra kasabasında ikâmet eden eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Samuk Noyin ecel-i mev'ûduyla vefât ediyordu.

Mengü Ka'ân bu haberi duydukda Alıcak Noyin nâmında birini eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı nasb etdikden sonra Samuk Noyin'in sebeb-i vefâtını araşdırıyor, nihâyet ihbârât-ı kâzibe üzerine Noyin'in vefâtını Amasya'da mukîm olan Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'ın dahl ve te'sîrine haml ederek bîçârenin Mogan'a celbini emr ediyordu. [394]

Ber-mûcib-i fermân-ı hâkânî eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Alıcak Noyin Erzurum'a müteveccihen hareket eyledikde Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay, kethüdâsı Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey'i vâlî kâ'im-makâmı nasb ederek 655'de Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'ı alıp müşârün-ileyhin atabegi Şemseddîn Artuk bin Boğa ve emîrü's-sevâhil Şücâ'eddîn Hâbil ile Mogan'a müteveccihen hareket edib Erzincân'a vusûlünde Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd füc'eten vefât etmiş idi.

Amasya'da vâlî kâ'im-makâmı olarak kalan Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey ile kale dizdârı Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey Amasya vilâyetini hüsn-i muhâfaza etmeğe çalışıyorlardı. Fakat eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Alıcak Noyin'in kethüdâsı olup Amasya'da ikâmet eden Zokay nâmında zâlim bir Tatar'ın teşvîki üzerine Amasya'da bulunan Tatarlar, pek çok zengin hânelerini gâret, a'râz-ı müslimîne tecâvüz ve pek çok şenâ'atler irtikâb etdiler.

Bir tarafdan Mengü Ka'ân Amasya'dan giden ümerâyı, Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'a hıyânet etdiklerini, mesmûmen vefâtına sebebiyet verdiklerini zann ederek i'dâm etmeğe kasd ediyor, diğer tarafdan Amasya'nın ahvâli gitdikçe karışıyor, erbâb-ı hukûka mu'în olanlar ölümle tehdîd olunuyor, fakat ortalığı bu kadar herc ü merce veren papazlar, mâ'il-i nasrâniyyet olan Tatarlar'ı muttasıl ehl-i İslâm aleyhine teşvîk [395] ve teşcî' ederek bütün Hristiyânlar huzûr ve emniyyet içinde yaşıyorlardı.

Amasya beylerbeyi Emîr Seyfeddîn Torumtay Mogan'da Mengü Ka'an'ın huzûruna girip Sultân Keykubâd'ın sûret-i vefâtını ve Hristiyânların tezvîrâtını mütecellidâne ve açık bir lisân ile i'lâm ederek müşârün-ileyhin rikkatini celb etmekle cümlesi de i'zâz ve ikrâm olunarak 656 evâ'ilinde Amasya'ya avdet etdiklerini müte'âkib Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan dahi tahsîl-i saltanat ederek Hülâgu Hân'ın nezdinden avdet eylediyse de Konya'ya dâhil olamayıp Sivas'da ikâmet etmişdir.

Emîr Seyfeddîn Torumtay, Amasya'ya avdet eyledikde gâret vak'asını tahkîk edib Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr el-Yâbirî'nin müsâmahasından neş'et eylediğine zâhib olarak mûmâ-ileyhi azl ve esnâ-yı vak'ada vazîfe-i teskîniyyeyi hüsn-i îfâ eden İzzeddîn Gül Bey'i Amasya dizdârı nasb eyledi.

657'de sâhib-i a'zam Şemseddîn Mahmûd et-Tugrâ'î'nin pederi olup Hâce Ahmed Yesevî Hazretleri'nin bi'l-vâsıta hulefâsından Amasya'da Hânkâh-ı Mes'ûdî şeyhi olan Baba İlyâs Horasânî vefât eylediği³⁹⁴ cihetle halîfesi Şemseddîn Ebu'l-Fezâ'il Behlûl Baba yerine Mes'ûdiyye şeyhi olmuşdur. Anadolu'da tarîkat-ı Babâ'iyye'nin mü'essisi Baba İlyâs Horasânî olup oğulları meşâhîr-i ümerâdan Şemseddîn Mahmûd, Mu'izzeddîn Alî, Ziyâ'eddîn Mes'ûd, Muhliseddîn Mûsâ'dır ki [396] bunlara "çâr-erkân" denmişdir. Hulefâsından İbik Baba, Behlûl Baba, Saltık Baba, Lokmân Baba pek meşhûr olup bunlara dahi "çâr-yâr" denmişdir. Tarîkat-ı Bektâşiyye mü'essisi olan Hacı Bektâş Baba, Çâr-yâr'dan olan Lokmân Baba'nın halîfesi idi.

Bundan akdem Amasya'ya gelmiş olan eyâlet-i Rûmiyye nâzırı Alıcak Noyin Merzifon'a gidip orada el-yevm "Alıcak Nâhiyesi" demekle meşhûr olan çiftliğinde ikâmet ve buradan bütün eyâlet-i Rûm'a nezâret etmişdir. Fakat kethüdâsı Zogay pek cebbâr olduğu cihetle bunun mezâlimi elsine-i âmmede mesel-i sâ'ir hükmünde idi.

Bunlardan İlhâniyye hükûmetini teşkîl eden Hülâgu Hân bin Tuli Hân bin Cengiz Hân Tebrîz şehrini merkez-i hükûmet ittihâz ederek Îrân, Irâk, Anadolu [397] kıt'alarını işgâl eylediğinden bu târîhden i'tibâren Amasya vilâyeti Hülâgu Hân'ın nüfûzu altına girmişdir.

İzzeddîn Keykâvus cihet-i garbiyyede ve birâderi Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan cihet-i şarkiyyede hükûmet ederken yek-diğeriyle harb ederek Kılıç Arslan Hân tarafı galebe etmiş idi. Üçüncü bir muhârebenin zuhûru esnâsında Hülâgu Hân'ın cülûsu vâki' olmakla Keykâvus bin Keyhusrev Tebrîz'e gidip Hülâgu Hân'a arz-ı mutâva'at ve bunu işiden Kılıç Arslan bin Keyhusrev dahi mevki'inden korkup derhâl Tebrîz'e giderek Hülâgu Hân'a arz-ı mütâba'at etmiş idi.

658 evâ'ilinde İl Hân demekle meşhûr olan Hülâgu Hân memleket-i Selçûkiyye'yi iki kısma taksîm ederek iki birâderin nizâ'ını def' için Kızılırmak'ın cihet-i garbiyyesini Konya'da ikâmet etmek üzere Rükneddîn Keykâvus Hân'a ve cihet-i şarkiyyesini de Simre'de ikâmet etmek üzere Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Hân'a i'tâ ve tevkî'î Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba'yı Keykâvus Hân'a ve Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Pervâne Bey'i de Kılıç Arslan Hân'a vezîr nasb etmişdir.

In Modern English

He was one of the slaves (close servants) of Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad and in the last years of this sultan's reign had become mîrâhûr (master of the stables, head of horse affairs). Later, when a suitable opportunity was found, he became governor of Amasya and lived in the Güdül quarter in Amasya. Samuk Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, was the son of Tagacar bin Temüke bin Nisoka Bahâdır, of the line of Temüke Ötçegin, brother of Genghis Khan. He lived on his farm, known today as "Samuk Alanı", within the borders of the kaza of Kedağra (Köprü), and governed the Rum Province from there.

Because Samuk Noyin followed the way of the Mongol ruler Mengü Kağan, was fair-minded and close to the Muslims, when he came to Anatolia he took with him Sheikh Takiyyeddîn Esen bin Satık eş-Şirvânî, one of the successors of Sheikh Şihâbeddîn Ömer es-Sühreverdî and an ornament of the imams, and brought him to the town of Kedağra. This person was known as "Esen Şeyh" and became the sole point of reference for scholars.

From this the following may be inferred: Samuk Noyin did not act tyrannically like Baycu Noyin, the nâzır of the Seljuk country, but wisely; he respected the particular circumstances of the Islamic environment in which he found himself and, honouring Islamic scholars, won everyone's affection. The prudent and gentle conduct of Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, also attracted Samuk Noyin's special affection.

At this time Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey, emir of Tokat, as mentioned in İbn Bîbî's history, had won very much the trust and favour of Baycu Noyin, nâzır of the Seljuk country, had had the emirate of Erzincan added to his post, and had come very much to the fore; but he was at odds in thought with Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya.

All emirates and posts were given by Baycu Noyin's special order, and the notables of the state did not dare make even a fitting objection to this. In short, such conditions of Baycu Noyin and his violent interference in the affairs of the Seljuk government greatly oppressed the notables of the state and especially Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev, and Celâleddîn Karatay, the sultanate's atabeg (the ruler's tutor and chief adviser), took leave of life in great despair at the end of 650 [1252-53].

The already grieving Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev's sorrow increased with the death of the said man. According to the records of histories such as the Târîh-i Baybars, the Zeyl-i İbn Hallikân and the Ikdu'l-Cümân, in 651 [1253-54] he withdrew from the sultanate into seclusion. His princes, Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus, Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan and Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad, sat on the throne together.

During this change in the sultanate Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey of Amasya, emir of Tokat and Erzincan, drew close to Sultan Kılıç Arslan Han as the pervane of the sultanate. In 653 [1255-56], when Celâleddîn Abdulvehhâb bin et-Tebrîzî, judge of Amasya, died, Alâ'eddîn Alî bin Mes'ûd el-Erzenî, professor of the Halîfe Madrasa and one of the well-known scholars, became judge of Amasya. Among the famous emirs, Şemseddîn Artuk, Bedreddîn Bülbül, Nâsıreddîn Sünbül, Necmeddîn Ferruh and İzzeddîn Gül also came to the fore from this time.

Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus, the first of the three joint sultans, being greatly affected by Baycu Noyin's conduct, decided to free the Seljuk sultanate from his oppressive interference, but could not persuade his brothers. For since each had different viziers and advisers, the three brothers could not unite on a single opinion, each pulled to one side, and the last word was left to Baycu Noyin's arbitrary will.

In early 654 [1256-57] Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus Hân, taking the death of the recluse sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev as an occasion, forcibly set his two brothers aside and declared his independence. To gain his own independence, Sultan Kılıç Arslan sent his pervane Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey to Baycu Noyin.

Baycu Noyin, who was already ready to interfere in the affairs of the Seljuk government, at once accepted Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey's application. He marched with a military force from Aksaray on Konya and fought Sultan Keykâvus Hân. Keykâvus was defeated and Mu'îneddîn Pervâne was taken prisoner; Sultan Kılıç Arslan and Sultan Keykubad, however, withdrew from the sultanate of their own wish. Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus Hân found it fitting that these two brothers live in Amasya with a sufficient allowance, and imprisoned Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey in the dungeon of Harşena, thus securing his independence.

But Baycu Noyin, joining with Samuk Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, renewed his force and marched on Konya a second time and fought. This time Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus was defeated; his sâhib-i a'zam İzzeddîn Alî bin Muhammed er-Râzî was killed. Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, who had been living in Amasya, became sole ruler of Anatolia in Şevval 654 [October-November 1256]. Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba et-Tugrâ'î became sâhib-i a'zam, Nizâmeddîn el-Mansûr regent of the sultanate (saltanat naibi), and Mu'îneddîn Süleyman sultanic pervane.

On the day Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Han went from Amasya to Konya and performed the oath of allegiance in the presence of Baycu Noyin for the second time, a banquet was given. At the end of the banquet Baycu Noyin, who ate a pear presented by the regent Nizâmeddîn el-Mansûr, suddenly died. His son Bisutay Noyin accused the poor regent of poisoning him and had him executed unjustly. Şücâ'eddîn Tekûr Sinan, the emir of the coasts (emîrü's-sevâhil), became regent, and another Şücâ'eddîn Hâbil became emîrü's-sevâhil.

Mengü Kağan sent in Baycu Noyin's place a man named Buyan Noyin as nâzır of the Seljuk country. Kılıç Arslan Han, seized with fear at this event, took Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey with him and in 655 [1257] went to Hamadan, to the eastern ruler Hülâgu Han, to have his sultanate confirmed. While his brother Keykâvus Hân, following Kılıç Arslan's departure from Konya, returned and declared his independence a second time, Samuk Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, who lived in the town of Kedağra, died when his time to die came.

When Mengü Kağan heard this news, he appointed a man named Alıcak Noyin as nâzır of the Rum Province and then investigated the cause of Samuk Noyin's death. In the end, on false denunciations, attributing the Noyin's death to the interference and influence of Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad, who lived in Amasya, he ordered that the poor man be brought to Mogan.

According to the khagan's decree, when Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, set out toward Erzurum, Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, appointed his kethüdâ (deputy) Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey as acting governor and in 655 [1257] took Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad and, together with the latter's atabeg Şemseddîn Artuk bin Boğa and the emir of the coasts Şücâ'eddîn Hâbil, set out toward Mogan. When they reached Erzincan, Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad suddenly died.

Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey, who remained in Amasya as acting governor, and Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey, the castle warden, were trying to protect the province of Amasya well. But at the instigation of a cruel Tatar named Zokay, the kethüdâ of Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, who lived in Amasya, the Tatars in Amasya plundered a great many rich houses, assaulted the honour and chastity of Muslims, and committed very many evils.

On the one hand Mengü Kağan, supposing that the emirs who had gone from Amasya had betrayed Sultan Keykubad and caused his death by poisoning, wanted to have them executed; on the other, the situation in Amasya was becoming more and more confused, and those who helped the rightful owners were threatened with death. The priests who had thrown everything into such disorder were constantly inciting and emboldening the Tatars who inclined toward Christianity against the Muslims, and all Christians were living in peace and security.

Emîr Seyfeddîn Torumtay, beylerbeyi of Amasya, appeared before Mengü Kağan in Mogan and in clear and courageous language reported the manner of Sultan Keykubad's death and the false reports of the Christians. The khagan's heart softened, respect and hospitality were shown to them all, and in early 656 [1258] they returned to Amasya. Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, too, returned from Hülâgu Han after having his sultanate confirmed, but could not enter Konya and settled in Sivas.

When Emîr Seyfeddîn Torumtay returned to Amasya, he investigated the plunder. Coming to the conclusion that it had arisen from the laxity of Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr el-Yâbirî, he dismissed him, and appointed as warden of Amasya İzzeddîn Gül Bey, who had maintained order well during the incident.

In 657 [1259] Baba İlyâs Horasânî, father of the sâhib-i a'zam Şemseddîn Mahmûd et-Tugrâ'î, an indirect successor of Hâce Ahmed Yesevî and sheikh of the Hankâh-ı Mes'ûdî in Amasya, died. Thereupon his successor Şemseddîn Ebu'l-Fezâ'il Behlûl Baba became sheikh of the Mes'ûdiyye in his place. The founder of the Babâ'iyye order in Anatolia is Baba İlyâs Horasânî. His sons were the famous emirs Şemseddîn Mahmûd, Mu'izzeddîn Alî, Ziyâ'eddîn Mes'ûd and Muhliseddîn Mûsâ; these were called the "çâr-erkân" (four pillars). Among his successors İbik Baba, Behlûl Baba, Saltık Baba and Lokmân Baba are very famous; these too were called the "çâr-yâr" (four friends). Hacı Bektâş Baba, founder of the Bektâşî order, was a successor of Lokmân Baba, one of the çâr-yâr.

Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of the Rum Province, who had come to Amasya earlier, went to Merzifon and settled on his farm known today as "Alıcak Nâhiyesi", and governed the whole Rum Province from there. But because his kethüdâ Zogay was very tyrannical, his oppressions were repeated on people's tongues like a proverb. In Merzifon today the "Zogu Nâhiyesi" is called by his name; he had acquired there a farm named "Zogay Alanı".

At the end of 657 [1259], when the Mongol ruler Mengü Kağan, whose rule covered two thirds of all Asia, died, division fell among the Mongols and they split into six governments. Of these, Hülâgu Han bin Tuli Han bin Genghis Khan, who founded the Ilkhanid government, made the city of Tabriz his centre and occupied the continents of Iran, Iraq and Anatolia. From this date the province of Amasya came under the influence of Hülâgu Han.

While İzzeddîn Keykâvus ruled in the west and his brother Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan in the east, they fought each other and Kılıç Arslan Han's side prevailed. When a third war was about to break out, Hülâgu Han's accession took place. Keykâvus son of Keyhusrev went to Tabriz and declared his obedience to Hülâgu Han. Hearing this, Kılıç Arslan son of Keyhusrev, fearing for his position, also went at once to Tabriz and offered his allegiance to Hülâgu Han.

In early 658 [1260] Hülâgu Han, famous as İl Han, divided the Seljuk country into two. To end the dispute of the two brothers, he gave the west bank of the Kızılırmak to Rükneddîn Keykâvus Han to live in Konya and the east bank to Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Han to live in Simre. By his order he appointed Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba as vizier to Keykâvus Han and Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Pervâne Bey as vizier to Kılıç Arslan Han.

Torumtay's Lasting Marks

Torumtay's name lives on in Amasya today. The Gökmedrese Mosque and the Torumtay Tomb are buildings called by his name. The mosque and madrasa were built in 1267 by Seyfeddin Torumtay, governor of Amasya; the tomb was built after his death, in 1278. In the tomb, together with Torumtay, lie his children and grandchildren. The tomb is a cut-stone building with an octagonal drum and a rectangular plan; its decoration, unlike Seljuk tombs, is concentrated in the upper parts of the building. The name of the complex is "Gökmedrese", which is accepted to come from the blue-glazed bricks of the tomb's drum. The governor whom Hüsameddin describes is the founder of one of the best-known Seljuk buildings of Amasya today.

Hüsameddin writes that Torumtay died in Rebîülâhir 679 [1280-81]. The Directorate of Culture and Tourism and other sources, however, report that the tomb was built in 1278. The record that the tomb was built after his death and the date 1278 are not reconcilable as they stand; this difference could not be removed in the sources we examined.

The Death of Baba İlyâs and the Çâr-yâr Account

Hüsameddin ties Baba İlyâs's death to 657 [1259] and in a footnote bases this on statements in documents dated 656 and 658. Yet the Babaî revolt and Baba İlyâs's being besieged and executed in Amasya in 1240 is information widely accepted in other studies. The account of four successors and four sons stands as a compilation peculiar to Hüsameddin. That Hacı Bektaş is counted as a successor of Lokman Perende is an account found in the Bektashi tradition; it could not be separately verified for this entry.

The Seljuk Struggles for the Throne

The main subject of the text is the joint sultanate of the three brothers, that is, İzzeddin Keykâvus, Rükneddin Kılıç Arslan and Alâeddin Keykubad. This period is called in Seljuk history the "era of joint sultanate" (1249-1254). Kılıç Arslan was placed alone on the throne (1257) after his elder brother Keykâvus was defeated by Baycu at Sultanhanı (1256). In 1258-59, by order of the Mongol khagan, the country was divided along the Kızılırmak between the two brothers; it is noted that Pervâne Muînüddin Süleyman had an important role in this division. The date of the division that Hüsameddin gives as "658" appears in the sources as 657 (July 1259).

Alâeddin Keykubad's sudden death on the road to Erzincan and the linking of Samuk Noyin's death with him are related in the text with their individual details. We could not verify these details in other sources.
