Hristiyânlar'ın ve bi'l-hâssa Ermenî ruhbânların zevcesi vâsıtasıyla Hülâgu Hân'a pek ziyâde hulûl etmeleri, âlem-i İslâm için bir dâhiye-i uzmâ olmuşdur.
Hristiyânlar, Anadolu'da Tatar beylerini her fedâkârlığı irtikâb ederek celb ediyorlar, birtakım tezvîrât ile onları ehl-i İslâm aleyhinde kullanıyorlar, ehl-i İslâmın beynlerinde hâsıl olacak ufak bir ittihâdı kırmak için her türlü mel'aneti tasnî' ederek Tatarlar'ı igzâb ve ehl-i İslâmı bunların ta'zîbâtı altında iz'âc ediyorlar, bu sûretle [399] Tatarlar'a Hrıstiyânlığı kabûl etdirmeğe çalışıyorlardı.
Binâ'en-aleyh memleket-i Selçûkiyye'de iki birâderin hükûmeti bir müddet müsâlemet-perverâne devâm eylediği hâlde Câmiu'd-Düvel'de mezkûr olduğu üzere Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan'ın dâ'ire-i hükûmeti dâhilinde ya'nî Simre civârında ikâmet eden Anadolu nâzırı Alıcak Noyin, Hristiyânların tezvîrâtıyla bu müsâlemeti hoş görmüyor, Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey dahi menâfi'-i İslâmiyyeyi rahne-dâr eden bu iki hükûmetin nüfûzu te'âruz ve tehâlüf etdikçe Hristiyânların nüfûzu tezâyüd edeceğini idrâk ediyor, her hâlde iki hükûmeti birleşdirmeğe çalışıyor, tabî'î kendi efendisi olan Kılıç Arslan Hân'ın istiklâlini muvâfık-ı maslahat buluyordu.
Sâhib-i a'zam Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, Simre nâzırı Alıcak Noyin'in Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus'dan i'râzını ve Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan tarafına meylini tahkîk edib birçok fedâkârlıkla bu meyli takviye ve Alıcak Noyin'i tamâmiyle celb ederek Sultân Kılıç Arslan'ın istiklâli esbâbını tehyi’e etmiş idi.
660'da Konya hükümdârı Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus'un Mısır sultânıyla ittifâk etdiği fikri, Konya nâzırı Buyan ve Simre nâzırı Alıcak Noyinler'e ilkâ ve tezvîr edilmekle bunların arz ve inhâsı üzerine Hülâgu Hân bîçâre Keykavus'u saltanatdan azl ve birâderi Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Hân'ı müstakillen Anadolu hükümdârı nasb eyledi. Binâ'en-aleyh Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus, perîşân bir sûrette memleket-i [400] Selçûkiyye'den çıkıp üç oğlu ve ba'zı etbâ'ıyla Bizans imparatorluğuna ilticâ etmişdir.
Sultân Kılıç Arslan Hân, Simre hükümdârı iken Amasya, Tokat, Sivas beldelerinde bi'l-münâvebe ikâmet etdiği münâsebetle Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay nâib-i saltanat olarak tesviye-i umûr-ı vilâyet etmekde idi. Bu def'a sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin Konya'ya azîmeti hasebiyle Torumtay Bey Amasya'da ibkâ ve Pervâne Bey'in birâderi Emîr Kutbeddîn Osmân mevki'-i dîvân-ı sultânî ve dayıları olan Hâce Sa'deddîn Yûnus el-Amâsî müstevfi'l-memâlik ve Pervâne Bey'in dâmâdı Mecdeddîn Muhammed bin Hüseyin atabeg-i saltanat ve eniştesi Hüsâmeddîn Geyük es-Salgârî emîrü'l-ümerâ olup Sultân Keykâvus'un vezîr-i a'zamı Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba İlyâs et-Tugrâ'î de Amasya'da pederi hânkâhında mütekâ'id olmuşdur.
Bâlâda arz edildiği üzere Hristiyân papazlarının Kubilay Ka'ân'a ve birâderi Hülâgu Hân'a pek ziyâde hulûlü hasebiyle bunların ta'zîbâtı ve Tatarlar'ın ta'addiyâtı ehl-i İslâma karşı kesb-i dehşet ediyor, Anadolu'da müdhiş mezâlimin kesreti işidenleri ağlatıyordu. Kubilay Ka'ân'ın heykeli ekser bilâd-ı cesîmede olduğu gibi Amasya'da şimdiki Tımarhâne civârına vaz' olunarak önünden geçen müslimleri cebren bu heykele secde etdiriyorlar, etmeyenleri öldürüyorlardı.
Kırım hükümdârı bulunan Berkây (Berke) Hân bin Cüci Hân [401] bin Cengiz Hân, Moğol hânları içinde birinci olarak dîn-i İslâmı kabûl etmekle Hülâgu Hân'ın ehl-i İslâmı bu kadar ta'zîb ve iz'âc etmesine dayanamıyor, Hülâgu aleyhinde i'lân-ı harb ederek hukûk-ı İslâmiyyeyi muhâfazaya ve mezâlimi tahfîfe çalışıyor, diyânet-i İslâmiyyeyi ve ehl-i îmânı müdâfa'a etmek için ulemâ ve ümerâ-yı İslâma rehberlik ediyor, ehl-i İslâmın üzerine çökmüş olan acz ve meskenet hissiyâtını kaldırmak istiyordu.
Berke Hân'ın muhârebâtını ta'kîb eden ulemâ-yı İslâm, bir tarafdan papazların gâyet iyi bir dîn-i hak olduğunu anlatmağa çalışdıkları Hristiyânlığın akıl ve mantıka muhâlif i'tikâdât-ı sahîfesini gâyet ma'kûl ve mantıkî bir sûretde teşrîh ederek Tatarlar'ı Hristiyânlıkdan tenfîr ve dîn-i İslâmın gâyet fıtrî, tab'-ı beşere gâyet mülâyim, akl-ı selîmin tabî'î bir sûretde kabûlüne hâhişger bir vaz'-ı İlâhî olduğunu ma'kûlât ve mahsûsât ile isbât ederek onları kabûl-i İslâma takrîb ve celb ediyorlar, diğer tarafdan ümerâ-yı İslâm, Tatar beylerine hissiyât-ı milliye telkîn ederek bir kelime-i şehâdet bedelinde kızlarını onlara tezvîc ve onların kızlarını da kendileri tezevvüc ederek alâka-i sıhriyyet meydâna getiriyorlardı.
Bu cümleden olarak Amasya'ya yeni gelmiş olan Karamsi, Söbüktay Noyinler Oktay Ka'ân'ın müsteşârı Karaçin bin Çıgay Noyin gibi keskin bir Hristiyânın oğulları olduğu hâlde Amasya ümerâsından [402] Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr el-Yâberî bunların hemşîresini tezevvüc ve Pervâne Bey'in birâderi Kutbeddîn Osmân Bey de iki kızını bunlara tezvîc ve Anadolu nâzırı Alıcak Noyin'in kızı Kiras Hâtun'u³⁹⁶ Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey tezvîc ederek bunları dâhil-i dâ'ire-i İslâm etmişler idi. Kezâlik nâzır-ı sâbık Samuk Noyin'in oğulları Tukan, Akboğa, Togacar Noyinler ve Tukan Noyin'in oğulları Ulay, İşboga Noyinler dahi bu sûretle müslim olmuşlar idi.
Nihâyet Hülâgu Hân, Berkay Hân'ın harbinde fenâ bir mağlûbiyet acısıyla muztarib olarak 663'de dünyâdan gitdikde yerine oğlu Abaka Hân Tebrîz'de taht-ı İlhânî'ye câlis olmuş idi. Erbâb-ı fazl u kemâlden, her biri birer fende yegâne-i rûzgâr olan Hâce Nasîreddîn Muhammed bin Hasan et-Tûsî, vezîr-i a'zam Hâce Şemseddîn Muhammed el-Cüveynî, Hâce Safiyyeddîn Abdülmü'min el-Urmevî, Hâce Cemâleddîn Yâkût el-Musta'sımî el-Amâsî³⁹⁷ Abaka Hân'ın etrâfını alıp âlem-i İslâm üzerinden Hristiyân papazlarının tahakkümât-ı şedîdesini def'e çalışıyorlardı.
Çünkü Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, Anadolu'da Sultân Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan nâmına Ermenîler'in tahakkümâtını, Hristiyânların ta'addiyâtını def'e himmet eylediği münâsebetle Ermeni papazları Kılıç Arslan Hân'a tevcîh-i [403] husûmet ederek müşârün-ileyhi ortadan kaldırmak için Kılıç Arslan'ın Abaka Hân'a isyân etmek, Tatarlar'ı Anadolu'dan sürüp çıkarmak ve bütün Hristiyânları kesmek teşebbüsâtında bulunduğunu Aksarây'da ikâmet eden Anadolu nâzırı Boyan Noyin'e ve Tatar beylerine müzevvirâne bir lisân ile iftirâ edib Tatarlar'ı igzâb ve bîçâre Sultân Kılıç Arslan'ı 664'de i'dâm etdirdikleri hâlde Pervâne Bey'in i'dâm etdirdiğini elsine-i âmmeye işâ'a etmişler idi.³⁹⁸
Sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin on yaşlarında bulunan şehzâdesi Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev Hân taht-ı Selçûkiyye'ye câlis olarak Fahreddîn Muhammed bin Hüseyin el-Konevî kemâ-kân vezîr ve Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey dahi müdebbir-i saltanat, müdîr-i umûr-ı memleket oldu. Fakat Kılıç Arslan'ın şehâdeti Anadolu'da pek ziyâde te'essürü mûcib olduğu cihetle kimi Hristiyânlardan nefret, kimi de Pervâne Bey'e husûmet etmeğe başladı.
Ez-cümle Amasya'da, Suşehri'ne giden Behlûl Baba'nın yerine Hânkâh-ı Mes'ûdî şeyhi olup Tatarlar'ın pek ziyâde mu'temedi ve avâmın müstenedi olan İzzeddîn İbik Baba, Tatarlar'ın efkârına tercümân olarak vak'a-i şehâdet mes'elesinde Pervâne Bey'e tevcîh-i husûmet ediyor, Amasya ümerâsından Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr bin Bahtiyâr ve Havza ile Kedağra emîri Celâleddîn [404] Mâh-ı Alem Beyler dahi İbik Baba tarafdârı olarak Pervâne Bey'e atıp tutuyorlardı.
665'de Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay, Güdül Mahallesin'deki câmi ve medresesini ikmâl ederek vakıf-nâmesini tanzîm ve Gök Medresesi müderrisliğini meşâhîr-i fuzalâdan Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd el-Garmînî es-Saygûnî uhdesine tevcîh eylediği esnâda Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey dahi Amasya'da ahşâb bir mevlevî-hâne inşâ ve meşîhatını Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî Hazretleri'nin hulefâsından eş-Şeyh Veliyyeddîn Ahmed bin Yûsuf el-Mevlevî'ye i'tâ etmekle İbik Baba'nın nüfûzuna bir mu'ârız nasb etmiş oldu.
Amasya'da ilk Mevlevî şeyhi olan eş-Şeyh Veliyyeddîn Ahmed Dede, Pervâne Bey'in mültezimi olduğu cihetle mevki'ini tahkîm ederek "Şeyh Velî Dede" unvânıyla iştihâr etdiği ve ba'dehû İbik Baba'nın nüfûzunu basdıracak bir mevki'e sâhib olduğu, Dede'nin bekâsıyla Baba'nın mecbûr-ı seyâhat olmasından istidlâl olunmakdadır.³⁹⁹ Baba'îler'in Dedegân'a igbirârı, Dedegân'ın da Baba'îler'e i'tizârı bu zamânın yâdigârı olmalıdır.
Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtay'ın bezl ü ihsânı sâyesinde her tarafdan Amasya'ya gelen fuzalâ ve ulemâ neşr-i ulûma ihtimâm ederek Amasya, Anadolu'da ikinci derecede dârü'l-fünûn hâlinde bulunuyordu. Gıyâseddîn [405] Mahmûd el-Garmînî, Safiyyeddîn Mustafa el-Amâsî, Ziyâ'eddîn Îsâ el-Hakkârî, Emîneddîn Muhammed bin et-Tebrîzî, Necîbeddîn Mûsâ el-Hallâtî, Sa'deddîn İsmâ'il er-Rûmî, Mecdeddîn Muhammed er-Rûmî bu zamânın ekâbir-i ulemâsından idi. Hele Amasya kâdı'l-kudâtı Sadreddîn Muhammed bin Hızır et-Tiflîsî bunların fevkinde bir muhakkik-ı zî-fünûn idi.
Zâviye-i Mes'ûdiyye şeyhi İbik Baba, gâyet natûk ve lisân-ı Arabî ve Fârisî ile fasîh bir sûretde mütekellim olup Tatarlar'ın meclûbu olmakla beraber mevki'i 669 hudûdunda tezelzüle uğruyordu. Çünkü İzzeddîn İbik Baba, Baba İshâk'ın etvârını takınarak zâhirî ve bâtınî iki meslek ta'kîb ediyor, sohbet-i yârân esnâsında îzâh eylediği mesleği ulemâya mün'akis oluyor, Amasya ulemâsı bu mesleği zühd ve takvâya, makâm-ı irşâd ve meşîhatda bulunan bir muktedâya muvâfık görmüyordu. Nihâyet kadı-i müşârün-ileyhin tahkîkâta kıyâm eylediğini gören İbik Baba 670'de Mısır'a firâr etmişdir.
Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, İbik Baba'nın firârını müte'âkib Zâviye-i Mes'ûdiyye'yi bir medrese i'tibâriyle müderrisînden Mecdeddîn Muhammed er-Rûmî'ye⁴⁰⁰ tevcîh edib İbik Baba'nın muhlislerinden Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey'i Harbrut emâretine nasb etmekle Amasya'dan kaldırmış ve Havza emîri bulunan Celâleddîn Mâh-ı Alem Bey'i de azl edib yerine Savcı Bey'i ta'yîn etmişdir. [406]
Hulâsa Mısır Türkleri galebe-i kâmileye mazhariyetle Tatarlar'ın burunları kırıldı.
Bunlardan esîr olarak Mısır'a giden Amasya ümerâsı şunlardır: Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Beyzâde Alâ'eddîn Alî, Amasya vâlîsi Seyfeddîn Torumtayzâde Sinâneddîn Mûsâ, müstevfi'l-memâlik Gümüşlüzâde Hâce Yûnus oğulları Nûreddîn Cebrâ'il, Emîneddîn Mikâ'il, Sirâceddîn İsmâ'il; Pervâne Bey'in birâderi Kutbeddîn Osmân, Alîşîrzâde Şihâbeddîn Gâzi, Alîşîr yeğeni Necmeddîn Ferruh, subaşı Seyfeddîn Sunkurca ve İzzeddîn Balaban Beyler.
In Modern English
He was the second son of Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev bin Keykubad. When he became ruler of Simre in Rebîülevvel 658 [1260], Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, became regent of the sultanate, Alâeddîn Alî el-Erzenî chief judge (kâdılkudât), and Sadreddîn Muhammed bin Hızır et-Tiflîsî professor of the Halîfe Madrasa.
From this date on, a high palace was built for Sultan Kılıç Arslan Han in Amasya, in what is today called the Dârüsselâm quarter, and below it one for Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Pervâne Bey; because they lived there, the people gave these places the name "Dârüsselâm". Sultan Kılıç Arslan had a mint each in Amasya and in the present town of Gümüş, famous as Gümüş Pazarı; coins struck at Gümüş Pazarı have been found. The Darphane quarter in Gümüş dates from this time.
Hülâgû Han, like his grandfather Genghis Khan, was attached to no religion and loved the scholars of every religion. But, as mentioned in the Câmiu'd-Düvel, because his wife was Christian his inclination toward Christianity was very strong. That the Christians, especially Armenian priests, gained great influence with Hülâgu Han through his wife was a great disaster for the Islamic world.
The Christians in Anatolia, ready to make every sacrifice, were drawing the Tatar beys to their side and using them against the Muslims through various slanders. To break even the smallest unity that might arise among Muslims they devised every kind of evil, angering the Tatars and oppressing the Muslims under their tortures. In this way they were trying to make the Tatars accept Christianity.
For this reason, although the government of the two brothers in the Seljuk country continued peacefully for a time, as mentioned in the Câmiu'd-Düvel, Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of Anatolia, who lived within Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan's department of government, that is, around Simre, did not look kindly on this peace at the Christians' instigation. Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, too, understood that as the influence of these two governments, which harmed the interests of Islam, clashed, the influence of the Christians would increase, and in any case was trying to unite the two governments. Naturally he found the independence of his own master Kılıç Arslan Han useful.
When the sâhib-i a'zam Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey understood that Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of Simre, had turned away from Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus and was inclined toward Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, he strengthened this inclination with many sacrifices and, winning Alıcak Noyin over completely, prepared the conditions for Sultan Kılıç Arslan's independence.
In 660 [1261-62] the idea that Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus, ruler of Konya, had allied with the sultan of Egypt was instilled in Buyan, nâzır of Konya, and Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of Simre, and on their reports Hülâgu Han deposed the poor Keykâvus from the sultanate and appointed his brother Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan Han sole ruler of Anatolia. Thereupon Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus left the Seljuk country in distress and took refuge in the Byzantine Empire with his three sons and some supporters.
Since Sultan Kılıç Arslan Han, while ruler of Simre, lived by turns in the cities of Amasya, Tokat and Sivas, Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, as regent was putting the affairs of the province in order. This time, when the sultan went to Konya, Torumtay Bey was left in Amasya. Pervâne Bey's brother Emîr Kutbeddîn Osmân was placed at the sultanic divan post, their maternal uncle Hâce Sa'deddîn Yûnus el-Amâsî as müstevfi'l-memâlik (head of the state treasury), Pervâne Bey's son-in-law Mecdeddîn Muhammed bin Hüseyin as atabeg, and his brother-in-law Hüsâmeddîn Geyük es-Salgârî as emîrü'l-ümerâ (chief of the emirs). Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Baba İlyâs et-Tugrâ'î, chief vizier of Sultan Keykâvus, began to live in retirement in Amasya in his father's khanqah.
As presented above, because the Christian priests had gained great influence with Kubilay Kağan and his brother Hülâgu Han, their tortures and the Tatars' attacks spread fear among the Muslims, and the abundance of heavy oppressions in Anatolia made those who heard of it weep. A statue of Kubilay Kağan, as in most of the vast countries, had been set up in Amasya too, near the present Tımarhane; they forced Muslims passing before it to prostrate themselves to this statue, and killed those who did not.
Berkay (Berke) Han bin Cüci Han bin Genghis Khan, ruler of the Crimea, being the first of the Mongol khans to accept the religion of Islam, could not bear Hülâgu Han's torturing and oppressing the Muslims so. He declared war on Hülâgu, tried to protect the rights of Islam and to lessen the oppressions. He led the scholars and Islamic emirs in defence of the religion of Islam and the believers; he wanted to lift the feeling of helplessness and poverty that had settled on the Muslims.
The Islamic scholars who followed Berke Han's wars, on the one hand, explained in an extremely reasonable and logical manner the pages of Christian belief contrary to reason and logic, which the priests tried to present as a very beautiful true religion, and so turned the Tatars away from Christianity, and by proving through reason and observation that the religion of Islam was an extremely natural divine order, very suited to human nature, which sound reason would naturally wish to accept, brought them closer to Islam. On the other hand, the Islamic emirs instilled national feelings in the Tatar beys, gave them their daughters in return for a single profession of faith (kelime-i şehâdet) and took their daughters, establishing relations of in-law kinship.
In this vein, Karamsi and Söbüktay Noyin, who had newly come to Amasya, were sons of Karaçin bin Çığay Noyin, a hard Christian who had been adviser to Ögeday Kağan. Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr el-Yâberî, one of the emirs of Amasya, married their sister; Pervâne Bey's brother Kutbeddîn Osmân Bey gave his two daughters to them; and Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey took Kiras Hatun, daughter of Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of Anatolia. Thus they had brought them into the circle of Islam. In the same way the sons of the former nâzır Samuk Noyin, Tukan, Akboğa and Togacar Noyin, and the sons of Tukan Noyin, Ulay and İşboga Noyin, had also become Muslim by this means.
In the end, when Hülâgu Han, overwhelmed by the pain of a bad defeat in his war with Berkay Han, departed this world in 663 [1264-65], his son Abaka Han sat on the Ilkhanid throne in Tabriz. Hâce Nasîreddîn Muhammed bin Hasan et-Tûsî, Hâce Şemseddîn Muhammed el-Cüveynî the chief vizier, Hâce Safiyyeddîn Abdülmü'min el-Urmevî and Hâce Cemâleddîn Yâkût el-Musta'sımî of Amasya, men of virtue and maturity, each the unique man of his age in one science, surrounded Abaka Han and were trying to remove the severe pressure of the Christian priests on the Islamic world.
For because Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey was trying in Anatolia, in the name of Sultan Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, to remove the Armenians' pressure and the Christians' attacks, the Armenian priests turned their enmity on Kılıç Arslan Han and, to do away with him, slandered him in lying language to Boyan Noyin, nâzır of Anatolia, who lived in Aksaray, and to the Tatar beys, saying that Kılıç Arslan had set about rebelling against Abaka Han, driving the Tatars out of Anatolia and slaughtering all Christians. They angered the Tatars and had the poor Sultan Kılıç Arslan executed in 664 [1265-66]; but they spread among the people that Pervâne Bey had had him executed.
The sultan's son, about ten years old, Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev Han, sat on the Seljuk throne. Fahreddîn Muhammed bin Hüseyin el-Konevî remained vizier as before, and Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey became administrator of the sultanate and head of the country's affairs. But since the martyrdom of Kılıç Arslan caused very great grief in Anatolia, some began to hate the Christians and others to harbour enmity toward Pervâne Bey.
Of these, İzzeddîn İbik Baba, who became sheikh of the Hankâh-ı Mes'ûdî in Amasya in place of Behlûl Baba, who had gone to Suşehri, much trusted by the Tatars and a support of the people, as spokesman of the Tatars' thinking directed his enmity at Pervâne Bey in the matter of the martyrdom. Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr bin Bahtiyâr, one of the emirs of Amasya, and Celâleddîn Mâh-ı Alem Bey, emir of Havza and Kedağra, also sided with İbik Baba and clashed with Pervâne Bey.
In 665 [1266-67] Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, completed his mosque and madrasa in the Güdül quarter and drew up its endowment deed, and gave the professorship of the Gök Medrese to Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd el-Garmînî es-Saygûnî, one of the well-known scholars. Just at this time Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey also had a wooden Mevlevîhâne built in Amasya and gave its sheikhdom to Sheikh Veliyyeddîn Ahmed bin Yûsuf el-Mevlevî, one of the successors of Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî, thus raising a rival against İbik Baba's influence.
Sheikh Veliyyeddîn Ahmed Dede, the first Mevlevî sheikh of Amasya, because he was a tax-farmer (iltizam holder) of Pervâne Bey, consolidated his position and was called "Şeyh Velî Dede". That he later reached a position to suppress İbik Baba's influence is understood from the fact that the Dede stayed while the Baba was compelled to remain a wanderer (on travel). The Babaîs' resentment against the Dedegân, and the Dedegân's apology to the Babaîs, must be a memory from this time.
Thanks to the generosity of Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, because the learned men and scholars who came to Amasya from everywhere took care to spread knowledge, Amasya was in the position of a second-rank dârülfünun (university) in Anatolia. Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd el-Garmînî, Safiyyeddîn Mustafa el-Amâsî, Ziyâ'eddîn Îsâ el-Hakkârî, Emîneddîn Muhammed bin et-Tebrîzî, Necîbeddîn Mûsâ el-Hallâtî, Sa'deddîn İsmâ'il er-Rûmî and Mecdeddîn Muhammed er-Rûmî were among the great scholars of this time. Above all these, Sadreddîn Muhammed bin Hızır et-Tiflîsî, chief judge of Amasya, was a deep researcher in many sciences.
İbik Baba, sheikh of the Mes'ûdiyye Zawiya, was a very good speaker, who used Arabic and Persian fluently, and though he was the darling of the Tatars his position was shaken around 669 [1270-71]. For İzzeddîn İbik Baba, following the path of Baba İshâk, pursued two paths, both outward and inward; the path he explained in friendly conversations conflicted with the scholars, and the scholars of Amasya did not regard this path as suitable to asceticism and piety for a leader in the position of guide and sheikh. In the end, seeing that the judge had begun an inquiry, İbik Baba fled to Egypt in 670 [1271-72].
After İbik Baba's flight, Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, regarding the Mes'ûdiyye Zawiya as a madrasa, gave it to one of its professors, Mecdeddîn Muhammed er-Rûmî. He removed Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey, one of İbik Baba's disciples, from Amasya by appointing him emir of Harput; he also dismissed Celâleddîn Mâh-ı Alem Bey, emir of Havza, and appointed Savcı Bey in his place.
As mentioned in the Ikdü'l-Cümân, after İbik Baba entered Egypt, because the words he spoke about hulûl and ittihad (God's being present in man and uniting with him) cast the Egyptian scholars into doubt about their beliefs, he was at once brought before its ruler al-Malik az-Zahir Baybars (Bey Pars) al-Bunduqdari, and after being questioned in a high divan of scholars was punished by beating.
İbik Baba, attributing this pain of exile and politics to Pervâne Bey's influence, became his implacable enemy. He left Egypt and went to Tabriz, settled there and tried to win over the Tatar emirs; more precisely, he worked cautiously in Tabriz to break Pervâne Bey's influence and to do away with his existence. But there he won the goodwill of the scholars and, serving the enlightenment of the Tatars, brought them closer to the circle of Islam and gained the trust of the Mongol ruler Abaka Han.
At this time, since the sanjak of Sinop was the iktâ of the great statesman Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, Emîneddîn Mikâ'îl Bey became emir of Sinop by his appointment. Tuka (Tukan) Noyin, son of Samuk Noyin, the former nâzır of the eastern countries, became nâzır of the eastern country, that is, the Kızılırmak basin; his brother Akboğa Noyin became nâzır of the northern direction, that is, Sinop, Kastamonu and their surroundings north of the Kızılırmak. İzzeddîn Muhammed Bey, son-in-law of Akboğa and nephew of Pervâne Bey, was nişancı, while among the emirs of Amasya Seyfeddîn İsmâ'il Bey, son of Artuk Bey, was emir of Beyşehir, and his brother Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey was bey of Tâziye, that is, Turhal and its surroundings.
Zogay, the business agent, that is, kethüdâ, of Alıcak Noyin, nâzır of Anatolia, living on his farm in Merzifon known today as "Zogu Nâhiyesi", devised unimaginable oppressions to acquire wealth and property. He extended the monthly tax he imposed on every person even to newborn children; the children of the helpless and poor who could not pay the tax he bought for three akçes and sold as slaves and concubines to Egyptian merchants. For this reason the people's complaints rained like rain on the Mongol ruler Abaka Han.
İzzeddîn İbik Baba, who was near Abaka Han, in order to take revenge for the beating he had taken from the ruler of Egypt, constantly incited Abaka Han to seize the land of Egypt, went to Egypt many times and came to Tabriz, reporting that most of the Egyptian emirs were partisans of the khan. Abaka Han, believing his lies and the incitements of the Christians who joined in, set about war with the Egyptian government in 675 [1276-77].
But since the emirs and people of Anatolia were wearied by Tatar oppression, they did not look kindly on this war. For they were sure that if the war ended in a Tatar victory the oppression would be redoubled. But since it was certain that Abaka Han would fight, although they accepted that supporting the Turkish and Muslim government of Egypt was fitting in religion and in interest, they were afraid of the Tatars. Some emirs who stood opposed to Pervâne Bey, such as Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey, governor of Harput, dared to correspond secretly with the Egyptian government and gave firm promises to help during the war.
Since the Tatar emirs living in Anatolia knew this thinking of the Muslims of Anatolia, they were putting the Muslim beys under surveillance and extinguishing the hearths of emirs they suspected. For this reason Hüsâmeddîn Biçâr Bey, who was heard to be corresponding secretly with the Egyptian government, his son Bahâ'eddîn Bahâdır Bey and his grandson Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Bey fled to Egypt in 675. After them Söbüktay Noyin, who lived in Amasya, and Karmasî Noyin, who lived in Tokat, brothers-in-law of Bahâdır Bey, also went to Egypt.
In short, in 675 the Tatar soldiers under the Mongol commander-in-chief Tutagun Noyin attacked the land of Egypt. The poor Muslim soldiers of Anatolia, under the Anatolian commander-in-chief Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey, helplessly subject to the Tatars, entered an aimless war with the Muslim soldiers of Egypt. All the emirs of Anatolia, including Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya, took part in this war. Of the emirs, İzzeddîn Gül Bey remained in Amasya as acting governor.
Baybars al-Bunduqdari, ruler of Egypt, violently repelled this unwarranted attack. In the battle he entered on the plain of Elbistan, he routed very badly the Mongol soldiers, unaware of national feelings and lacking religious thought, and laid low all the commanders, beginning with the commander-in-chief Tutagun Noyin. In short, the Egyptian Turks won a complete victory and the Tatars' noses were broken. The order of corruption built by the Christian priests was destroyed from its foundations.
In this war of the Mongol ruler Abaka Han there was neither a national reason nor a necessity. But there is no doubt that it was the Christians' incitement that produced this war. For although the invincible power of the Mongol government had brought under its yoke the strongest Islamic governments in Asia, it cannot be claimed that its power was insufficient against the small Christian government of Trebizond. That the Greek kingdom in Trebizond continued its existence happily and proudly is no accident but a clear proof that Christianity exercised extraordinary influence over the Mongol government.
If one examines the fact that in this war the emirs of Anatolia went alive to Egypt as prisoners while the Tatar emirs were killed and destroyed, it is understood that the emirs of Anatolia helped the Egyptian government. The emirs of Amasya who went to Egypt as prisoners were these: Alâ'eddîn Alî, son of Mu'îneddîn Pervâne Bey; Sinâneddîn Mûsâ, son of Seyfeddîn Torumtay, governor of Amasya; the sons of Hâce Yûnus Gümüşlüoğlu, müstevfi'l-memâlik, Nûreddîn Cebrâ'il, Emîneddîn Mikâ'il and Sirâceddîn İsmâ'il; Pervâne Bey's brother Kutbeddîn Osmân; Şihâbeddîn Gâzi, son of Alîşîr; Necmeddîn Ferruh, nephew of Alîşîr; the subaşı Seyfeddîn Sunkurca; and İzzeddîn Balaban Bey.
If the Mongol government had known national feelings, that is, followed a national policy, it would neither have cut down the Turkmens of Anatolia nor, by fighting the Egyptian Turks, broken its own arm and wing. It would have mended relations with them, and after removing with a little effort Byzantium, swimming in confusion, and the small Greek governments of Trebizond, which lived by deceiving the Turkish and Tatar governments that surrounded them on every side and setting them against each other, it would have founded a glorious great state in Asia and Europe. Because this defeat of the Tatars gave the emirs of Anatolia the power of defence, it had been the beginning of the end of Tatar influence in Anatolia.
For Karaman Beyoğlu Şemseddîn Mehmed Bey, taking advantage of the fact that part of the emirs of Anatolia were prisoners and part scattered and busy, and that Tatar strength was destroyed, as mentioned in İbn Bîbî's history, attacked the emptied city of Konya, and Kunduz Beyoğlu Celâleddîn Mâh-ı Alem Bey attacked the city of Amasya, and took both. In Konya they killed Hâce Sa'deddîn Yûnus el-Müstevfî Gümüşlüoğlu and the beylerbeyi Celâleddîn Hüsrev Şâh Bey, son of Şemseddîn Tutaş Bey, and a few companions; in Amasya they killed the acting governor İzzeddîn Gül Bey and his companions.

Who Was Pervâne Muînüddin Süleyman
Muînüddin Süleyman Pervâne is the statesman who gave his name to a period of Anatolian Seljuk history, the "Pervâne Period". He was the son of Mühezzebüddin Ali, vizier of Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev II. Muînüddin, first mentioned as emir of Tokat, is recorded as having entered a struggle for influence with Torumtay over a post in Erzincan and won it with Baycu Noyan's support. The text too had related their disagreements with Torumtay. When Kılıç Arslan came to the throne he took office as pervane and in time took power completely into his own hands; although Kılıç Arslan sat on the throne, it was Pervâne who ran the state.
Hüsameddin ties Kılıç Arslan's death to the slander of the Christian priests and the Tatars' anger, and defends Pervâne's innocence. The picture in other sources is the opposite. At the time of Kılıç Arslan's death there is the conquest of Sinop: Pervâne had taken Sinop (1266), asked the sultan to give him the city, and obtained this too. Then he told the Mongols that Kılıç Arslan had come to an understanding with the Mamluks and obtained permission for the sultan to be killed. According to research Kılıç Arslan was killed in Aksaray after a banquet; the event was hidden from the people and it was said that the sultan had died of illness. That is, Hüsameddin's account exonerating Pervâne and the present sources part ways.
The Battle of Elbistan and the End of Pervâne
The war of 675 [1277] related near the end of the text is the battle in which the Mamluk sultan Baybars and the Mongols met on the plain of Elbistan (15 April 1277). The Mongol army suffered a heavy defeat; the Seljuk soldiers under Pervâne's command did not fight seriously, and some changed sides. Baybars came to Kayseri and was received amid the people's displays of joy. But because of Pervâne's double-sided policy and the shortage of food in his army, Baybars withdrew to Syria. Abaka Khan, seeing no Seljuk bodies among the Mongol bodies on the battlefield, accused Pervâne of collaboration with the Mamluks and had him executed in July-August 1277.
The Mongols' revenge after this defeat was also heavy. It is written that Abaka Khan ordered all the cities and towns he passed on his way back to be plundered and their people killed, and that 200,000 people are said to have been killed in this punitive campaign. Hüsameddin's text does not mention this slaughter; after Elbistan it continues with what happened in Amasya through Mâh-ı Alem's action.
Karamanoğlu Mehmed Bey and Konya
The "Karaman Beyoğlu Şemseddîn Mehmed Bey" of whom Hüsameddin speaks is Karamanoğlu Mehmed Bey. After Baybars's victory he set out, taking with him Alâeddin Siyavuş (Cimri), claimed to be one of the sons of İzzeddin Keykâvus II, who was in the Crimea. He entered Konya on 9 Zilhicce 675 (14 May 1277) and proclaimed Siyavuş Seljuk sultan. In another TDV entry the same event is given in 677 (1279); that is, there is a difference of date in the sources. Siyavuş and Mehmed Bey were later defeated and killed by the Mongol-Seljuk army. Hüsameddin's mentioning Mâh-ı Alem's taking of Amasya alongside the taking of Konya fits a historical framework in this respect; but the capture of Amasya could not be verified in other sources.
İbik Baba and Pervâne
Hüsameddin's description of İbik Baba as Pervâne's implacable enemy and as one trusted by the Tatars is a valuable local account reflecting the Babaî-Mevlevî rivalry in Amasya. It is known that Mevlânâ presented his work "Fîhi mâ fîh" to Pervâne and that Pervâne was a close friend and disciple of Mevlânâ. Pervâne's having a Mevlevîhâne built in Amasya is therefore consistent with this closeness. The details of the Mevlevîhâne and of İbik Baba's Egyptian adventure could not be verified in other sources.
