Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

677'de Kırım'da vefât eden Sultân İzzeddîn Keykâvus bin Sultân Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev bin Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd Hân'ın büyük şehzâdesi olup vâlidesi Moğol hânlarından ilk müslim olan Berkay (Berke) Hân'ın kerîmesi Orbay Hâtun idi. 687 şevvâlinde [425] Simre (Amasya)'da câlis-i taht-ı Selçûkî olarak Amasya hükümdârı⁴⁰⁸ oldukda Amasya vâlîsi beylerbeyi Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey vezîr olmuşdur.

Amasya kadısı Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd el-Garmînî kâdı'l-kudât ve İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey kemâ-kân pervâne-i sultânî, Amasya muhassılı Hâce Muhibbeddîn Mevdûdü'z-Ziyârî müstevfi'l-memâlik ve Tatarlar'a intisâbı mükemmel olan Şemseddîn Ahmed el-Lâkûşî⁴⁰⁹ atabeg-i saltanat olup bunlar üzerine Erzincân'da ikâmet eden Anadolu nâzır-ı umûmîsi Geyhatu Hân tarafından bi'l-vekâle Tolatay Bozgucî (Tolatay Noyin) dahi nâzır-ı umûr-ı memleket nasb edilmişdir.

Amasya hükümdârı Sultân Mes'ûd Hân-ı Sânî Amasya'da hall ü akd-ı umûra mübâşeret ederek meşâhîr-i ümerâdan Şemseddîn Tutaş Beyzâde Muzaffereddîn Arslan Bey'i Kastamonu vâlîliğine, Alâ'eddîn Savcı Bey'i Sivas vâlîliğine, Devletşâhzâde Gıyâseddîn İsmâ'il Bey'i Ankara vâlîliğine, Pervâne Beyzâde İzzeddîn Muhammed Bey'i sevâhil-i bahriyye emâretine ve "Tâcî Kızıl" demekle meşhûr Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey'i Tokat emâretine nasb eyledi.

Çünkü 727'de Bursa kadısı bulunan Şemseddîn Ahmed bin eş-Şeyh Mustafa bin İbrâhim el-Kırşehrî, şeyh-i müşârün-ileyhin mahdûmu ve 743'de vezîr bulunan Nizâmeddîn Ahmed Paşa bin Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin eş-Şeyh Mustafa Bâlî dahi müşârün-ileyhin hafîdi, kezâlik evâhir-i ahd-i Osmânî'de kâdı'l-kudâti'l-Osmâniyye olan Musliheddîn Mûsâ bin Mecdeddîn Îsâ es-Salgarî, âlim-i müşârün-ileyhin mahdûmu ve 761'de vezîr-i kebîr bulunup Sinan Paşa⁴¹⁵ demekle meşhûr olan Sinâneddîn Yûsuf Paşa bin es-Sadru'l-Kebîr Îsâ dahi müşârün-ileyhin hafîdi olduğu kuyûd-ı atîkadan anlaşılmakdadır.

Selâtîn-i Âl-i Osmân hazerâtının Amasya şehrine karşı ibrâz buyurdukları hissiyât-ı teveccüh-kârâne târîhen meşhûd ve Amasya ümerâsının ve a'yânının selâtîn-i Âl-i Osmân hazerâtına tav'an arz-ı mutâba'at ve her husûsda ibrâz-ı sadâkat etdikleri de târîhen müsellem olduğu tedkîk edilirse Amasya'nın ve Amasyalıların saltanat-ı celîle-i Osmâniyye'ye karşı mevki'leri tamâmiyle ta'ayyün eder ve tabl ve alem irsâli de Amasya hükûmetinden sebk eylediği anlaşılır.

Taklîd-i seyfin Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Muhammed Rûmî Hazretleri yâhud ahfâdı taraflarından îfâ edildiği, târîh ile gayr-i kâbil-i te'lîf olan hurâfât-ı Mevleviyye'den ma'dûddur. 1012'de câlis-i taht-ı Osmânî olan [430] Sultân Ahmed Hân-ı Evvel hazretlerine kadar ahfâd-ı Mevlânâ'dan ma'dûd olan zevâtdan⁴¹⁶ hiçbirinin selâtîn-i Âl-i Osmân hazerâtına taklîd-i seyf etdikleri târîhen ma'lûm değildir.

Moğol hükümdârı Argun Hân'ın ittihâz eylediği şu tedâbîr-i muvakkata Anadolu sükkânını te'mîn ve Türkmen beylerinin harekâtını ta'dîl edecek bir hâlde değil idi. Çünkü bu kadar zevâtı ta'yîn ve ikdâr etdiği hâlde bir müddet sonra Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh yalnız tahsîl-i emvâle münhasır olarak nüfûz-ı saltanat, müstakillen nâzır-ı memleket olan Tulatay Noyin'in şahsında temerküz ediyor, Argun Hân'ın kendisi ve her beldede ikâme eylediği Tatar şıhneleri eski mezâlimi ma'a-ziyâdetin yapıyorlardı.

689'da Simre kâdı'l-kudâtı Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd bin Abdül'azîz el-Garmînî irtihâl-i dâr-ı bekâ ederek meşâhîr-i kudâtdan Nâsıreddîn Muhammed bin Ahmed el-Bôrî Simre kâdı'l-kudâtı olmuş, eş-Şeyh Sadreddîn Muhammed Çelebi Mevleviye şeyhi ve Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Baba Mes'ûdiyye şeyhi bulunup Şemseddîn Ahmed bin el-Verdî ve Mecdeddîn Ömer bin el-Hakkârî ve Mecdeddîn Îsâ es-Salgârî meşâhîr-i ulemâdan görülmüşdür.

Târîh-i İbni Bîbî'de mezkûr olduğu üzere mukaddemen Tebrîz'e giden Anadolu nâzırı Geyhatu Hân'ın bu esnâda Erzincân'a avdeti şâyi' oldukda Amasya hükümdârı Sultân Mes'ûd Hân nâzır-ı mûmâ-ileyhi istikbâl etmek [431] üzere Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh Bey'i alıp Erzincân'a gidiyor, Devletşâhzâde Gıyâseddîn İbrâhim Bey âbâ vü ecdâdının memleketi olan Kastamonu şehrine ansızın hücûm ederek vâlîsi bulunan "Alp Yörük" demekle meşhûr Muzaffereddîn Arslan Bey'i katl ve şehri zabt ediyordu.

Kastamonu hâkimi Gıyâseddîn İbrâhim Bey bu kadarla iktifâ etmiyor, Sultân Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd'un Amasya'da sâkin olan birâderi Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan'ı hafiyyen Kastamonu'ya celb ederek pâdişâhlığını i'lân eyliyor, kendisi nâib-i saltanat olup Sultân Kılıç Arslan nâmına bütün memâlik-i Dânişmendiye'yi istîlâya kalkışıyordu.

Bu vekâyi'i müte'âkib Argun Hân, irtikâb etdiği mezâlimin mücâzâtı olarak genç iken 690 senesi evâ'ilinde helâk oldukda Erzincân'da bulunan birâderi Geyhatu Hân der-akab Tebrîz'e gidip câlis-i taht-ı İlhânî oldu. Kastamonu hâkimi İbrâhim Bey'in harekâtı Geyhatu Hân'ın hiddetini celb etmekle Sultân Mes'ûd'un ma'iyyetine bir kuvve-i kâfiye terfîk ederek Kastamonu'ya irsâl eyledi.

Amasya hükümdârı Sultân Mes'ûd Hân, asâkir-i Tatar'ı alıp nâib-i saltanatı Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh, vezîri Necmeddîn Ferruh Beyler'le 690'da Kastamonu tarafına âzim olduysa da İbrâhim Bey'in harbinde münhezim ve her üçü de esîr oldu. Çünkü Sultân Mes'ûd'un yanında Tatar askerini gören Türkmenler, az oldukları hâlde Tatar mezâlimi altında cân vermemek için cândan harb etmişler idi. [432]

Müte'âkiben "Candâr" demekle meşhûr olan Şemseddîn Timur Paşa bin Arslan Bey⁴¹⁷ mensûb olduğu Alayuntlu kabîlesi Türkmenleri'ni yanına alıp Sultân Kılıç Arslan tarafdârânıyla harb ederek onları bozdu. Sultân Mes'ûd'u, Mücîreddîn ve Necmeddîn Beyler'le esâretden tahlîs ederek Osmâncık'a kadar getirdi. Buradan Sultân Mes'ûd Hân, erkân-ı devletiyle beraber Simre'ye avdet edib Şemseddîn Timur Bey'i Kastamonu vâlîliğine nasb eylemişdir.

Fakat sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin vezîri Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey Amasya'ya geldiği esnâda vefât eylediğinden Amasya'da binâ etdiği Burma Minâre demekle meşhûr olan câmi-i şerîfi derûnunda defn edilmiş olduğu türbesinden ve evkâfını tanzîme vakti müsâ'id olmadığı cihetle halefi bulunan İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey tertîb eylediği de vakıf-nâmesinden nümâyândır. Şemseddîn Ahmed el-Lâkûşî vezîr olmuşdur.

691 evâ'ilinde Konya tarafı hükümdârı olan Sultân Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev bin Keykubâd bin Keyhusrev dahi vefât etmekle Amasya hükümdârı Sultân Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd Hân bütün Anadolu hükümdârı olduğunu müte'âkib Geyhatu Hân, Tolatay'ı azl edib Taştimur el-Hatâyî nâmında müslim bir emîri Anadolu nâzırı nasb ve irsâl eyledi. Sultân Mes'ûd Hân [433] ba'dehû Konya'ya gidip Amasya emâretini İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey'e mâlikâne olmak üzere tevcîh etmişdir.

In Modern English

He was the eldest son of Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus bin Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev bin Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad Han, who died in the Crimea in 677 [1278-79]. His mother was Orbay Hatun, daughter of Berkay (Berke) Han, the first of the Mongol khans to become Muslim. When in Şevval 687 [1288] he sat on the Seljuk throne at Simre (Amasya) and became ruler of Amasya, Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey, governor of Amasya and beylerbeyi, became vizier.

Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd el-Garmînî, judge of Amasya, became kâdılkudât; İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey was sultanic pervane as before; Hâce Muhibbeddîn Mevdûdü'z-Ziyârî, the muhassıl (tax collector) of Amasya, became müstevfi'l-memâlik; and Şemseddîn Ahmed el-Lâkûşî, whose loyalty to the Tatars was complete, became atabeg. Above them, as deputy in the name of Geyhatu Han, general nâzır of Anatolia, who lived in Erzincan, Tolatay Bozgucî (Tolatay Noyin) was also appointed nâzır of the country's affairs.

Sultan Mes'ûd Han (the second), ruler of Amasya, began to settle and resolve affairs in Amasya: he appointed Muzaffereddîn Arslan Bey, son of Şemseddîn Tutaş Bey, one of the famous emirs, to the governorship of Kastamonu; Alâeddîn Savcı Bey to the governorship of Sivas; Gıyâseddîn İsmâ'il Bey, son of Devletşâh, to the governorship of Ankara; İzzeddîn Muhammed Bey, son of Pervâne Bey, to the emirate of the coastal regions; and Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey, famous as "Tâcî Kızıl", to the emirate of Tokat.

As mentioned in the Aylemü'z-Zâhir, the frontier bey who lived in the town of Söğüt on the Greek frontier and was known for his holy wars against the Greeks, the head of the Turahanlu tribe, Gâzi Ertuğrul Bey, son of Süleyman Şah, died this year, and his son Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey took his place.

As mentioned in the Câmiu'd-Düvel, the Greeks, who had been dominated by the Islamic community in the time of Gâzi Ertuğrul Bey, that is, the Kayı Han clans living in and around the town of Söğüt, took advantage of Ertuğrul's death, thought of clearing them out completely, and entered into great preparations. Learning of this, Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey sent his nephew Aktimur Bey, together with Gündüz and Oykud Bey, among his close men, to Sultan Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd-ı Sânî in Amasya, and informed him of his father's death and of the Greeks' movement and intentions, asking for help.

Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, gave Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey, son of Gâzi Ertuğrul, his father's emirate; he helped by sending war equipment and sufficient arms, and ordered the beys of that region to help Osmân Bey. He also received well the persons Osmân Bey had sent and sent them back.

Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey, emir of Söğüt, equipped his army with the equipment and arms he received from Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, and fought in 688 [1289]. In the battle he routed the Greeks and conquered Karacahisar by force, and then appointed a judge there in his own name. First Tursun Fakîh read the sermon (hutbe) in the name of Sultan Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd, then in the name of Muzaffereddîn Osmân. This sermon became the document of the step Osmân Bey took toward independence, at first under the protection of Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya.

Emîr Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey announced the victory he had won to Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, presenting the captured tekûr (lord) of the conquered Karacahisar together with a large number of prisoners and severed heads. Sultan Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd Han, greatly delighted, sent the emir several equipped horses from his own special mounts, a knobbed war mace, a valuable hil'at (robe of honour), a tabl and alem (drum and standard) and a special sword; he added the places conquered to the city of Söğüt, his father's property, and gave them to him.

Although this reliable account, which Dervîş Ahmed Efendi relates and prefers in the Câmiu'd-Düvel and which Hâce Sa'deddîn Efendi corrects in the Tâcü't-Tevârîh, accords with the course of historical events, Alâeddîn Keykubad's sending a tabl and alem in 699 [1299-1300] does not accord with history. For it is historically certain that the first Alâeddîn Keykubad among the Seljuk sultans died in 634 [1236-37], and that the second Alâeddîn Keykubad became ruler in 696 [1296-97] and was deposed in 699.

The learned man of Amasya, Mecdeddîn Îsâ bin Tagar es-Salgarî, whose being of Amasya is certain from the records and who is thought to have been charged with delivering the special sword that Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, sent to Emîr Muzaffereddîn Osmân Bey, is thought to have girded the sword on the emir; and it is thought that Sheikh İmâdeddîn Mustafa bin İbrâhim bin İnâc el-Kırşehrî, his father-in-law, famous as "Ede Bâlî, Ata Bâlî", offered the prayer.

For Şemseddîn Ahmed bin Sheikh Mustafa bin İbrâhim el-Kırşehrî, who was judge of Bursa in 727 [1326-27], was the son of the said sheikh. Nizâmeddîn Ahmed Pasha bin Şemseddîn Mahmûd bin Sheikh Mustafa Bâlî, who became vizier in 743 [1342-43], was his grandson. In the same way Musliheddîn Mûsâ bin Mecdeddîn Îsâ es-Salgarî, who in the late Ottoman period was Ottoman kâdılkudât (kazasker), was the son of the said scholar. Sinâneddîn Yûsuf Pasha bin es-Sadru'l-Kebîr Îsâ, famous as Sinan Pasha, who became grand vizier in 761 [1359-60], was his grandson. This is understood from old records.

The feelings of affection that the Ottoman sultans showed toward the city of Amasya have been seen historically. That the emirs and notables of Amasya willingly obeyed the Ottoman sultans and showed loyalty in every matter is also accepted historically. If this is examined, the position of Amasya and the Amasyans toward the Ottoman sultanate becomes fully clear, and it is understood that the sending of the tabl and alem also came from the government of Amasya.

That the girding of the sword was done by Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Muhammed Rûmî or his grandsons is counted among the Mevlevî superstitions that cannot be reconciled with history. Until Sultan Ahmed Han I, who sat on the Ottoman throne in 1012 [1603], it is not historically known that any of those counted among Mevlânâ's grandsons girded a sword on an Ottoman sultan.

These temporary measures taken by the Mongol ruler Argun Han were not in a state to bring security to the people of Anatolia and to bring the movements of the Turkmen beys within measure. For although he had appointed and charged so many people, after a time Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh busied himself only with collecting money; the authority of the sultanate was gathered in the person of Tulatay Noyin, nâzır of the independent country. Argun Han himself and the Tatar shihnas he placed in every city continued the old oppressions to excess.

In 689 [1290], when Gıyâseddîn Mahmûd bin Abdülazîz el-Garmînî, kâdılkudât of Simre, passed to the abode of the hereafter, Nâsıreddîn Muhammed bin Ahmed el-Bôrî, one of the famous judges, became kâdılkudât of Simre. Sheikh Sadreddîn Muhammed Çelebi was Mevlevî sheikh and Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Baba sheikh of the Mes'ûdiyye. Şemseddîn Ahmed bin el-Verdî, Mecdeddîn Ömer bin el-Hakkârî and Mecdeddîn Îsâ es-Salgârî were seen among the famous scholars.

As mentioned in İbn Bîbî's history, when the news spread that Geyhatu Han, nâzır of Anatolia, who had earlier gone to Tabriz, had at this time returned to Erzincan, Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, took Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh Bey and went to Erzincan to meet the said nâzır. Gıyâseddîn İbrâhim Bey, son of Devletşâh, suddenly attacked the city of Kastamonu, the homeland of his fathers and grandfathers, killed its governor Muzaffereddîn Arslan Bey, famous as "Alp Yörük", and seized the city.

Gıyâseddîn İbrâhim Bey, ruler of Kastamonu, was not content with this. He secretly brought to Kastamonu Rükneddîn Kılıç Arslan, brother of Sultan Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd, who lived in Amasya, and proclaimed his sultanate. He himself, as regent of the sultanate, set about seizing the whole Danishmendid country in the name of Sultan Kılıç Arslan.

After these events, when Argun Han, as punishment for the oppressions he committed, died young in early 690 [1291], his brother Geyhatu Han, who was in Erzincan, went at once to Tabriz and sat on the Ilkhanid throne. The action of İbrâhim Bey, ruler of Kastamonu, drew Geyhatu Han's anger; he joined a sufficient force to Sultan Mes'ûd and sent him to Kastamonu.

Sultan Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, took the Tatar soldiers and went toward Kastamonu in 690 with the regent of the sultanate Mücîreddîn Emîr Şâh and his vizier Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey, but was defeated in the battle he fought with İbrâhim Bey, and all three were taken prisoner. For the Turkmens who saw Tatar soldiers with Sultan Mes'ûd, though few in number, fought with all their might so as not to die under Tatar oppression.

Then Şemseddîn Timur Pasha, son of Arslan Bey, famous as "Candar", taking with him the Turkmens of the Alayuntlu tribe to which he belonged, fought the supporters of Sultan Kılıç Arslan and routed them. He freed Sultan Mes'ûd from captivity together with Mücîreddîn and Necmeddîn Bey and brought them as far as Osmancık. From here Sultan Mes'ûd Han returned to Simre with the notables of the state and appointed Şemseddîn Timur Bey to the governorship of Kastamonu.

But Necmeddîn Ferruh Bey, vizier of the said sultan, died as he came to Amasya. This is understood from his tomb, in which he is buried inside the honoured mosque famous as Burma Minare that he had built in Amasya, and from his endowment deed, which his successor İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey drew up because he had no time to arrange his waqfs. Şemseddîn Ahmed el-Lâkûşî became vizier.

In early 691 [1292], when Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev bin Keykubad bin Keyhusrev, ruler of the Konya side, also died, Sultan Gıyâseddîn Mes'ûd Han, ruler of Amasya, became ruler of all Anatolia. Thereupon Geyhatu Han dismissed Tolatay and appointed and sent a Muslim emir named Taştimur el-Hatâyî as nâzır of Anatolia. Sultan Mes'ûd Han later went to Konya and gave the emirate of Amasya to İzzeddîn Muhammed Pervâne Bey as mâlikâne (with its revenue for life).

Osman Bey and Karacahisar

This entry is the most striking section drawing a link from Amasya to the founding history of the Ottomans. According to Hüsameddin, after Ertuğrul Bey's death Osman Bey asked Sultan Mes'ûd for help, conquered Karacahisar in 688, had the sermon read first in Mes'ûd's name and then in his own, and Sultan Mes'ûd sent him a tabl, alem and sword. Hüsameddin cites the Câmiu'd-Düvel and the Tâcü't-Tevârîh as the source of this tradition; but he does not find the tradition of the tabl and alem sent in the name of Alâeddin Keykubad in 699 consistent with history.

Present-day research treats this account more cautiously. According to the entry on Osman I, the taking of Karacahisar appears to have occurred in 687 (1288) and is interpreted as an action against the tekfur of Karacahisar, who paid tribute to the Seljuk sultan. With this conquest Osman became master of the region and in effect replaced the Seljuk-Ilkhanid deputies. According to the tradition Osman had the sermon read in his own name in Karacahisar; but the same entry writes that the facts listed in Âşıkpaşazâde as the basis of this claim of independence may have been added much later by those who believed the dynasty began with Osman. Hüsameddin's finding 699 contrary to history in the tradition of the tabl and alem is meaningful for this reason too: Alâeddin Keykubad III reigned between 1298 and 1302 and is mentioned in the sources together with Osman at the siege of Karacahisar. Hüsameddin, however, mentions the second Keykubad, who became ruler in 696; the number of sultans and the dates differ in the two accounts.

The date of Ertuğrul's death is also disputed. In a footnote Hüsameddin writes that this date appears in the sources as 687, 680 and 689, and finds 687 stronger according to the course of events. In the entry on Osman I, however, whether the tribe was Kayı and the genealogy of the family are regarded as disputed because they are recorded in different forms in the sources.

On the other hand, the claim that Sultan Mesud II lived in Amasya and helped Osman Bey from there could not be verified in the sources we examined. The entry on Mesud II writes that the sultan was sent by Argun Khan from Tabriz to Anatolia and ascended the throne first in Kayseri and then in Konya (1284). Presenting the centre as Amasya is peculiar to Hüsameddin; he himself states in a footnote that this has been proved by documents and records.

The Kastamonu Campaign

The sources write that Mesud's brother Rükneddin Kılıç Arslan went to Kastamonu and, uniting with its ruler Yavlak Arslan Çobanoğlu and the Turkmens, claimed the sultanate. Geyhatu Khan sent an army; at its head were Mesud II, Mücîrüddin Emîrşah and the vizier Necmeddin, with Mongol commanders. In the end the Mongol-Seljuk army prevailed and Yavlak Arslan was killed (1292). In Hüsameddin's account, however, Mesud is defeated and taken prisoner and Şemseddin Timur Pasha, famous as Candar, rescues him. This account does not agree with the outcome in the sources. The person Hüsameddin calls "Muzaffereddin Arslan (Alp Yörük)" is most probably Muzaffereddin Yavlak Arslan Çobanoğlu of the sources; but this matching is an inference made by us.

Amasya in the Time of Mesud II

According to the sources a flood disaster occurred in Amasya and Niksar in Mesud's time. Mesud died in Kayseri in 1308. It is also recorded in the sources that "Vizier Necmeddin" was in the army that set out on the Kastamonu campaign; this agrees with Hüsameddin's presenting Necmeddin Ferruh as vizier. Lâkûşî's being sent to Anatolia as vizier is also written in the same source; as to the details, Hüsameddin's sequence could not be verified in other sources.

Ottoman Scholars and the Salgarî Line

We could not separately verify the details Hüsameddin lists concerning the Ottoman scholars and viziers of the Kırşehrî and Salgarî lines; this information rests on his own sources and records.
