In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He is the son of Seyfullah Bey, son of Mustafa, one of the notables of Amasya. In his youth he entered the Enderun Palace and was brought up there. He learned various kinds of script. He was then released from the Enderun and given a zeamet.

For a time he was alaybeyi of Amasya, and because he showed ability in the Baghdad wars he became Bey of the sanjak of Arapkir in 1038 [1628-29]. Then, from the governorship of Eskişehir, he became sanjak governor of Amasya in the month of Dhu al-Hijja of 1043 [1634]; in the middle of Muharram 1044 he was dismissed because of illness, and at the beginning of Safar he died.

His sons are Ahmed and Ali Beys. He was a calligrapher and a mirliva. A "Şerhu'l-Vikâye" that I saw in the libraries of Istanbul was written in his hand. At the end of this book, which he wrote in 1030 [1620-21], there is written an Arabic phrase meaning "This book was completed by the hand of the weak servant Vâyis, son of Seyfullah, son of Mustafa, of Amasya." In the Enderun Register his name is recorded as Üveys Seyfeddin Amasiyye.

The sons of Ahmed Bey are Abdullah and Mehmed Ağas. Ali Bey died a few years after his father. Abdullah Ağa's son el-Hâc Mustafa Ağa was among the notables of the year 1120 [1708-09]; Mehmed Ağa's son, the calligrapher Seyfullah Efendi, is one of the men of state.

The sons of Hacı Mustafa Ağazâde el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa are el-Hâc Ahmed and Veysî Efendi. El-Hâc Ahmed Efendi, one of the ulema, died in 1203 [1788-89], and el-Hâc Veyis Efendi, one of the great ulema, died in 1213 [1798-99]. Hacı Ahmed Efendizâde es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi died in 1221 [1806-07].

His son es-Seyyid el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi died in 1245 [1829-30]; the sons of his son es-Seyyid Mustafa Efendi are es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mehmed Tâhir Efendi, one of the notables of Amasya, and es-Seyyid Ali Efendi, one of the officers. The sons of Hacı Tâhir Efendi are Ahmed Nâfiz Bey, deputy for Amasya, and Mustafa Sıdkı Bey, mayor of Amasya.

The Şerhu'l-Vikâye and Vâyis Bey's Copy

The book Vâyis Bey copied in 1030 [1620-21] is the commentary that Sadrüşşerîa, grandson of Burhânüşşerîa Mahmûd, wrote on the latter's work called the Vikâye, counted among the basic texts of Hanafi jurisprudence. In Ottoman madrasas students read this commentary in their first years and then completed their higher studies with the Hidâye. Whether the copy was written for study or for another purpose is not clear. Hüsameddin does not say in which library the copy is; the present location of the manuscript could not be found in this study. The phrase recorded by Hüsameddin and the "Üveys Seyfeddin Amasiyye" entry in the Enderun Register show that the man bore the names Vâyis and Üveys together; the heading of the entry, "Üveys Bey, Vâyis Bey", also comes from this (inference).

His Posts and Dates

Between the year of Vâyis Bey's appointment to the sanjak of Arapkir, 1038 [1628-29], and his appointment to the sanjak of Amasya, 1043 [1634], there are five years; for the years between, Hüsameddin mentions only the governorship of Eskişehir. Which campaigns the "Baghdad wars" were is also not written. His governorship of Amasya did not last even a year; he died shortly after being dismissed because of illness.

His Descendants

Hüsameddin follows the continuation of the line through death dates between 1120 [1708-09] and 1245 [1829-30] and brings the chain to his own contemporaries, Ahmed Nâfiz Bey (deputy for Amasya) and Mustafa Sıdkı Bey (mayor of Amasya). In which years these two men served is not written in the text. No information on the descendants of Vâyis Bey, on Ahmed Nâfiz Bey or on Mustafa Sıdkı Bey was found in other sources.
