In Modern English

He was the son of Hacı Hasan Ağa, a sipahi of Amasya and the son of Sancı Ali Ağa. Raised in the household of Bekir Beyzâde Ömer Pasha, he became steward (kethüda) to the Pasha's son Osman Bey, and city steward during the latter's term as chief ayan.

In 1133 [1720-21] he was investigated over certain matters and sent into exile. On his return, as a member of the council of ayan, he had his rival Gürcüzâde Hacı İbrahim Bey banished to Samsun and took his place as chief ayan, and in Muharrem 1140 [August-September 1727] he became mütesellim (deputy governor) of Amasya. He was dismissed in Muharrem 1141 [August 1728] and died in 1142 [1729-30]. He was among the leading figures of the ayan. His son is Hacı Hasan Ağa.

Rivalries Among the Ayan

The most striking event in the entry is the settling of accounts between two ayan: Hasan Ağa had his rival Gürcüzâde Hacı İbrahim Bey banished to Samsun and became chief ayan in his place. He himself had been investigated and exiled in 1133; exile, in other words, was a tool that could be turned by one man against another in this circle. Hüsameddin does not give the reason for the affair, nor what became of the rival afterward.

The Ağa became mütesellim in Muharrem 1140 and was dismissed a year later. In these years the office of mütesellim of Amasya passed in turn to entries 621, 620 and the Ahmed Ağa of this entry (1136, 1137 and 1140), so the post evidently changed hands in short terms. No information on him or on Gürcüzâde İbrahim Bey was found in other sources.
