In Modern English

He is the son of Mahmud Ağa, son of Kara Ca'fer, of Zana village in Amasya, and was born to Şerife Fatıma Hatun, daughter of Seyyid Abdülvehhab, paternal aunt of Seyyid Hacı Abdülvehhab Efendi of Ortaköy, who gave public lectures, son of Seyyid Süleyman, son of Seyyid Abdülvehhab, son of Seyyid Şükrullah Çelebi; his seyyid status (descent from the Prophet) is on his mother's side.

While his father was sipahi kethüda in Amasya, he learned from famous scholars, Seyyid Hacı Ali and Abdullah Sânî Efendi, of the İğneci Ömer Ağazade line, and while giving public lectures he became in 1093 [1682] administrator (mütevelli) of the waqf of the Hâce Sultan lodge, and in 1095 [1684] müderris of Atabeg Gazi.

While thus becoming known and coming to the fore, in 1099 [1687-88] he went to the Hijaz and escaped prosecution because he was implicated in the "incident of the emirs." After the pilgrimage he stayed about a year as a neighbor (of the Prophet's mosque) in Medina and when he returned in 1101 [1689-90], from the post vacated by the death of Saçlı Emir Ömer Ağa he became administrator of the Yakub Pasha waqf, then müderris of Atabeg for the second time, preacher of the Pervane Bey Mosque, and a salaried holder of stipends from the waqfs of Mustafa Bey and Sinan Pasha as well.

In 1109 [1697-98] the administratorship of the Yakub Pasha waqf was taken from him and he became administrator of the Hâce Sultan waqf; several times he served as deputy of the nakîbüleşraf (head of the Prophet's descendants). In Şaban 1114 [December 1702] he became mufti of Amasya, was dismissed in Ramadan 1117 [December 1705], then was a member of the council of notables and once also chief of the âyan, and died in Zilhicce 1140 [July-August 1728].

He was a scholar, mature in religious rulings, inclined to display, respected, a fine speaker, courteous, rich and open-handed, a worthy man. He is the head and greatest ancestor of the Zanalızade lineage in Amasya. His sons are Seyyid Veliyüddin, Şerif Mehmed, Abdullah, Mahmud and Ali Efendis. His son-in-law is his cousin Ca'fer Ağa, son of Veli Ağa, son of Ca'fer; the son of his daughter is the former grand vizier Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Pasha, known as "Hubyarlı."

Among the müderrises, Seyyid Şerif Mehmed Efendi died in 1157 [1744]; his son-in-law, the zeamet-holder Ali Ağa, died in 1173 [1759-60]. His son is Seyyid Şerif Mehmed Pasha. Their children were also called "Şerifzade" and "Şerif Pasha."

The müderris of Atabeg, Seyyid Hacı Abdullah Efendi, died in 1160 [1747] and left his sons Seyyid Hacı Ahmed and Mahmud Efendis. As Hacı Ahmed Efendi was known by the name "Bakırcı" (Coppersmith), his children were called "Bakırcızades." Among these is Seyyid Hâfız Nureddin Mehmed Efendi, son of Seyyid Mustafa Efendi, son of Seyyid Hacı Mustafa Efendi, son of Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Efendi, one of the müderrises who died in 1318 [1900-01].

The müderris of Atabeg, Seyyid Mahmud Efendi, son of Seyyid Hacı Abdullah Efendi, also died in 1183 [1769-70] and left his son Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Efendizade, the âyan member Hâfız Seyyid Hacı Veliyüddin Ağa, and his brother the janissary serdar Seyyid Mahmud Tahir Ağa. They were called "Zanalızades." Seyyid Ahmed Efendi, Hacı Veli Ağazade, died in 1281 [1864-65] while müderris of Atabeg, and his son, the head of trade, Seyyid Hacı Mehmed Emin Efendi, died in 1338 [1919-20], and his son Captain Mustafa Nazif Efendi died a martyr in 1333 [1914-15].

Zana Village and the Zanalızade Family

Zana, from which the family came, is today called Çiğdemlik; the village lies at the 12th kilometer of the Amasya-Taşova road. In the Arabic inscription of the fountain in the village cemetery the builder is written as "Halil bin Muhammed ez-Zûnî," and the date is 1275 (1859). The inscription thus gives directly the nisba form meaning "of Zana"; this is a local trace showing that the name "Zanalızade" in the entry rests on the village name.

The notable aspect of the entry is that the same family held a place in Amasya's religious and administrative cadre for more than two hundred years: the Atabeg professorship appears under the names of people of this line in dates stretching from 1095 to 1281. The Atabeg Madrasa was built by Atabey Nasıreddin Ahmed Bey, who was governor in Amasya between 1322 and 1327, and he endowed all his land to it. No source other than the information Hüsâmeddin gives was found on the Hâce Sultan lodge, the Yakub Pasha waqf and the other waqfs in the text.

The Incident of the Emirs

The politically most conspicuous point of the entry is the "incident of the emirs" of 1099; in the text only its name appears. Seyyid Ahmed Efendi's being implicated in this incident and going to the Hijaz suggests that going on the pilgrimage was both an act of worship and a way of getting away from prosecution. However, this interpretation is an inference from the text, and no information on the details of the incident was found in other sources. That on his return he carried out many posts together, such as waqf administration, professorship and preaching, is notable in showing how waqf revenues and salaried services were gathered within the circle of the âyan at that time.

Branches of the Line

The entry divides the line into three names: the Şerifzades (the line of Şerif Mehmed Efendi and Şerif Mehmed Pasha), the Bakırcızades (the line of Hacı Ahmed Efendi) and the Zanalızades (the line of Mahmud Efendi). It is written that Captain Mustafa Nazif Efendi, the last link of the line, fell a martyr in 1333 [1914-15]; the text does not state the place or front. No information was found in other sources on Hubyarlı Ahmed Pasha and Şerif Mehmed Pasha.
