In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He is the son of Hacı Hüseyin Efendi, son of Pîrî Mehmed Efendi, son of Hüseyin Çelebi, among the learned and the leading men of our learned lineage. He learned learning and knowledge from scholars and, having learned various kinds of script from the müderris Ahmed Efendi, became clerk of the beytülmal (state treasury).

Later he became divan efendisi to Kadızade Mustafa Pasha and, under the patronage of Kapucuzade Hacı Ahmed Pasha, entered the body of clerks of the divan-ı hümayun; in turn he became second tezkireci and then accountant of the cizye. After remaining without office for a time, in 1135 [1722-23] he became janissary efendisi.

In 1136 [1723-24] he was dismissed, in 1137 [1724-25] he became chief accountant, and in 1138 [1725-26] janissary efendisi for the second time. However, because he offended the janissary ağa Hasan Ağa, in the middle of 1139 [1727] he was dismissed and sent to Amasya. He died in 1141 [1728-29]. He was a scholar, a calligrapher and a well-mannered man.

An Amasyan Who Rose by the Pen

The entry describes an Amasyan who rose not through learning but through the pen and accounts. Ahmed Efendi learned writing from a müderris, became a calligrapher, and, beginning with the treasury clerkship, entered among the clerks of the divan-ı hümayun. His offending the janissary ağa Hasan Ağa removed him from his post and from Istanbul. The entry also shows how decisive pasha patronage was in this rise: after serving as divan efendisi of Kadızade Mustafa Pasha, he entered among the divan clerks under the patronage of Kapucuzade Hacı Ahmed Pasha.

A note must be made for the family tree. The father in the text, Hacı Hüseyin Efendi, son of Pîrî Mehmed Efendi, must be the same person as the "Fâzıl Hüseyin Efendi" mentioned in entry 626, because there Pîrî Mehmed Efendi's other grandson Ahmed Ağa appears as "the nephew of Fâzıl Hüseyin Efendi." This identity is not written explicitly; it is an inference based on the agreement of names and lineage. In that case the two Pîrîzade Ahmeds are cousins. No information was found in other sources on Ahmed Efendi and the pashas named.
