The Mevlevi Lodge of Amasya
Mevlevism in Amasya was one of the early Mevlevi centres of Anatolia. According to an article based on Hüsameddin's Amasya Tarihi, the first Mevlevi lodge was built in 1314 by Alâeddin Ali Pervane Bey, who also arranged its endowments. This building stood on the bank of the Yeşilırmak near the Hükümet Bridge; in old records it appears as "Mevlevîhâne-i merhum Alâeddin Pervane". The same article lists a series of Mevlevi sheikhs in Amasya from the end of the thirteenth century. In the time of Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha, Nusretzâde Cemâleddin Ahmed Dede of Zile was sheikh, after him Mehmed Cuî Dede, then Mecdüddin Küpeli Dede. It is stated that Müstencid Dede became sheikh in 1436.
The father of Bayram Dede, the subject of the heading, appears in the text as Cemâleddin Habib Çelebi, son of Nusreddin of Zile. In the article mentioned, however, the sheikh of Şâdgeldi's time is Nusretzâde Cemâleddin Ahmed Dede. Because of the difference between the two names (Habib and Ahmed), it is unclear whether they are the same person; that they belong to the same family and the same line of sheikhs is an inference. The text states plainly that Sheikh Nusreddin was from Zile (ez-Zilevî); this attribution suggests that the family came to Amasya from Zile, but there is no document. The text says that Bayram Dede became sheikh on the death of Müstencid Dede. Since Müstencid Dede is stated to have become sheikh in 1436, Bayram Dede's tenure falls in the years after that date; this is an inference, and no exact date is given.
The Lodge in Later Years
According to the same article, in 1567 the sheikh was Ömer Çelebi and then İbrahim Çelebi; during this time there were outbreaks of banditry, and in 1602 the lodge burned. When the grand vizier Bayram Pasha had water brought to his home town of Amasya and fountains built, he also had a Mevlevi lodge built there, assigned seventy akçe a day to its sheikh and endowed sufficient waqfs. Hüsameddin writes that this new lodge stood in the Kocacık quarter on the bank of the Yeşilırmak (see no. 509). No information was found in the sources that were read about Bayram Dede's son Abdurrahman Çelebi or his other relatives. Bayram Dede's own name does not appear in the article on the Amasya lodge that was read.
