Notes and Research
Old Words in the Text
- ümerâ: beys, emirs; in the Ottoman state, sanjak beys and senior military administrators
- sipâhi: a person who served as a mounted soldier in return for timar income
- mirlivâ: sanjak bey; "livâ" means sanjak
- görüldü: was mentioned in the records with that rank, was appointed to that post
The Person in the Text and His Descent
According to the chain at the opening of the text, the Emîr Bey of the heading is the son of Cüneyd Bey; the information about the sipahi status, the mirlivâ rank and the wars also belongs to him. The sentence could grammatically be attached to Cüneyd Bey himself, but since the heading is arranged around Emîr Bey, this reading has been followed. The text does not give Emîr Bey's name separately; the nickname "Tuğuroğlu" appears in the heading.
Other entries in the book shed light on the same family. According to one entry, Tuğur Bey, son of Sayis Beyzâde Kaya Bey of Zile, served Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha, ruler of Amasya, and died in 783 [1381-82] in the battle against Kâdı Burhân; his son Ali Bey and his grandson Cüneyd Bey became known as "Tuğuroğlu," and Tuğur was also called "Tokur." Another entry says that Cüneyd Bey, son of Tokuroğlu Ali Bey of Zile, joined the ranks of the beys in 843 [1439-40] while a zeamet holder of Amasya, showed valor at the battle of Varna, and fell as a martyr at the conquest of Istanbul in 857 [1453]. This Cüneyd appears to differ from the Cüneyd Bey of entry 323: here the line is traced through Hızır and Bâyezîd Bey, in the other through Ali Bey, and their death dates also differ. It appears that there was more than one Cüneyd in the same family, but which of them was Emîr Bey's father cannot be determined.
Varna and the Conquest of 1453
The battle of Varna was the battle of 10 November 1444 in which the Ottoman army under Murad II defeated the Crusader army. Read together, the years Hüsameddin gives show that he became a sipahi eleven years before Varna and was made mirlivâ about five years after the battle; these intervals are calculations drawn from the dates in the text. The text links the mirlivâ rank to "the valor he showed in the battle of Varna."
Searches in other sources for the sanjak in which Emîr Bey served in Amasya, the sanjak of which he became mirlivâ, and the place of his death found no information. Hüsameddin's record remains the only source for this person.
