What This Entry Points To

The entry is only a cross-reference. The person's own life story is told in later entries of the book under the heading "Müeyyed Çelebi," and his uncle is treated in a separate entry. The only information given here is the line of descent. The sentence in the text can be read in two ways: Müeyyed Çelebi is either the son of the İmâdeddîn Ömer named in it, or the son of Nizâmeddîn Mahmûd Çelebi, a descendant of the Hallâtî family. The translation follows the second reading, judging by the final phrase of the sentence; the first reading is also grammatically possible. The text does not explain what the names "Emîr Şeyh" and "Kadızâde" in the heading rest on.

The Hallâtî Family

In Hüsameddin's book the Hallâtî family appears as one of the long-established lines of scholars and judges in Amasya. According to the survey of families in the introductory section, the name refers to the descendants of Necîbeddîn Mûsâ el-Hallâtî, one of the Amasya madrasa professors, who died in the early 700s [1300-01]; they split into two branches, called the "İmâdîs" and the "Mes'ûdîs." According to the book, the "Şeyh Müeyyedzâde" branch came out of the İmâdî branch.

The persons in the chain are mentioned in other entries as follows. Necîbüddîn Mûsâ was a müderris (madrasa professor) at the Torumtay Madrasa. His son Şemseddîn Mehmed, known as "Hallâtîoğlu," served for many years as chief judge of Amasya, went to Damascus in 727 [1326-27], and died there in 729 [1328-29]; his sons were İmâdeddîn Ömer, Şehâbeddîn Ahmed and Gıyâseddîn Es'ad Çelebi. İmâdeddîn Ömer also became chief judge of Amasya and, according to another entry, later became military judge (kazasker) of Eretna Bey. The same book mentions Pîr Mehmed Çelebi as one of İmâdeddîn Ömer's sons; Pîr Mehmed served as clerk of the Amasya court and as judge of Kedağra, and died in 814 [1411-12]. Another entry gives the chief judge of Amasya, Müeyyedüddîn Mehmed, as the son of İmâd Çelebi, and mentions him among the judges removed from office in 791 [1388-89]. Hüsameddin does not say that either of these Müeyyeds, or neither, is the same person as the Müeyyed Çelebi of entry 321; his identity remains uncertain.

On the Name Müeyyedzâde

The name Müeyyed Çelebi was used for more than one person in Amasya. The entry on Müeyyedzâde Abdurrahman Efendi in the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi states that he was born in Amasya in 860 [1456] and that his father was Alâeddin Ali Çelebi, son of Şemseddin Müeyyed Çelebi, a Kâzerûniyye sheikh belonging to the Divriklizâde family. Hüsameddin, in another entry on the Müeyyedzâde family, gives the line of descent as "Müeyyed Çelebi bin Alaeddin Ali Yarî Çelebi bin Zeyneddîn Siyavuş Çelebi," while in the introductory section he attaches the same Müeyyedzâde branch to the İmâdî branch of the Hallâtî family. These two accounts in the book do not agree, and neither is enough to determine which branch the Müeyyed Çelebi of entry 321 belonged to. In another entry, Hüsameddin writes that in 917 [1511-12] Ayşe Hâtun, wife of Şemseddîn Ahmed, judge of Amasya, built a school next to the mosque of her grandfather Müeyyed Çelebi.

Searches for Emîr Şeyh Necîb Çelebi, the emir of Tokat mentioned as his uncle, found no information in any other source. Searches on the Hallâtî family likewise did not lead to any study that treats this family separately; the information above has been compiled solely from Hüsameddin's own book.
