Prince Murad's Years in Amasya

Hüsameddin ties Pehlivan Şah Bey's career to Sultan Murad II's years in Amasya. Murad was born in Amasya in June 1404 and, when he turned twelve, was sent to Amasya with the governorship of the province of Rum, which covered the regions of Amasya, Tokat, Sivas, Çorum and Osmancık. This agrees with Hüsameddin's date 818 [1415-16]. A year later, in 1416, he was ordered to march with the Amasya forces toward Saruhan and İzmir to put down the revolt of Börklüce Mustafa; the revolt was put down by Bayezid Pasha with the Amasya and Sivas forces. When Murad left Amasya, the nomadic Kara Tatars in the region caused disorder, and the prince returned to Amasya with Bayezid Pasha. Between 1417 and 1421 Prince Murad and his new atabeg, the beylerbeyi of Rum Hamza Bey, took Samsun from the İsfendiyarids. Murad came to the throne on 25 June 1421 [824], which agrees with Hüsameddin's note "at his accession in 824".

It is also known that Amasya in this period was an Ottoman center under Çelebi Mehmed's administration: in 1399 Mehmed was sent as governor to the province of Rum, which covered Amasya, Tokat, Sivas and Ankara and had earlier belonged to the Eretnid lands. Hüsameddin's saying "he took part in all the wars in the time of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed" can be read within this context.

Points That Could Not Be Verified

No information was found in other sources on Pehlivan Şah Gazi Bey, his father Bayat Bey, his forefathers Halil Bey and Şücâeddîn Pehlivan Bey, or Kaya Bey. The emirate of Tokat, the "patriotic movement" of 829 and the event that offended Murad are not mentioned in the sources read; what this event was and what Pehlivan Bey did could not be determined. Nothing was found either on the present-day trace of the family called Pehlivanoğulları. In the searches "Pehlivanoğlu" was met only as a present-day surname; no relation with the emirs in the entry could be established.
