In Modern English

He was from Canik. He was a son of Osman Pasha of Canik, former Beylerbeyi of Sivas, and is famous as "Caniklizâde." At the beginning of the month of Şevvâl 1038 [1628–29] he came as sanjak bey and tax collector (muhassıl-ı emvâl) of Amasya. Doğan Bey went to Canik. Dizdâr Ömer Bey became alaybeyi of Amasya, Altıncı Hüseyin Ağa yeniçeri serdârı, and es-Seyyid Ca'fer Çelebi nakîbü'l-eşrâf kaymakamı.

The notables of Amasya for whom a decree was issued to bring them to the Imperial Divan to be tried were these:

Hoca Ahmed Pasha, the former kadı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi son of Çavuş, Mehmed Efendi son of Şeyh Muharrem Efendi, Kadı of Amasya, Ferruh Efendi, Mufti of Amasya, es-Seyyid eş-Şeyh Ahmed Efendi, Nakîbü'l-Eşrâf Kaymakamı, the former muhassıl Rıdvan Bey, Mustafa Bey son of Yörgüç Pasha, Mustafa Bey son of Kadı, Mustafa Bey son of Çerkes Bey, the former kethüdâyeri Mustafa Ağa son of Murâd Bey, the Deputy Mütesellim Şa'bân Ağa, the city kethüdâ Bâlî Çelebi, Mehmed Ağa son of Taşçı, the Janissary Serdar Üçüncü Hüseyin Ağa.

The Mirliva Hasan Bey and the Naib of Amasya el-Hâc Süleyman Efendi set about having the goods and property plundered from Hüftâdî Bey's mansion collected from the people for the state treasury (beytülmâl) and showed considerable violence. But the goods collected and sold were not even a third of the goods and property plundered.

The notables sent from Amasya reached Istanbul at the end of Şevvâl and were all put into the Yedikule Dungeon. Hasan Efendi of Amasya, Kazasker of Rumeli, had learned of the incident from letters written from Amasya.

Grand Vizier Hüsrev Pasha had become serdar for the Persian War and crossed to Üsküdar. Hoca Ahmed Pasha, finding an easy way, was able to tell the grand vizier the Hüftâdî incident in all its detail and to explain that the notables of the sanjak were innocent and had been wronged.

After learning the details of the incident, Hüsrev Pasha submitted to the sultan in summary that the notables of Amasya be pardoned and released, and received permission. On the eighteenth day of Zilkade he set out from Üsküdar toward Konya, and the notables of the sanjak toward Amasya.

In the middle of the month of Zilhicce the notables of Amasya came to Amasya and gave the people the joy of peace and contentment. This year İn'âm Beyzâde Seyyid Ahmed Bey of Amasya, Sanjak Bey of Kayseri, was also unjustly martyred in Kayseri at the hands of the men of Ömer Bey son of Hacı Ahmed, an upstart. İsmâil Efendi of Yağmur Village, müderris of the Hızır Pasha Madrasa and one of the scholars, died.

At the beginning of the month of Muharrem 1039 [1629–30], el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi son of Çavuş became kadı of Amasya, and Mustafa Efendi son of Şeyh Ya'kûb, Müderris of the Sultan Bâyezîd, became mufti of Amasya. In Safer, since Hasan Bey, Mütevelli of the Sultanic Waqfs, was promoted and became beylerbeyi, Ali Ağa of Dimetoka again became mütevelli of the sultanic waqfs.

In Rebîülevvel, since the Mirliva Hasan Bey was assigned to the Baghdad War, Kuloğlu Mehmed Ağa, newly arrived from Baghdad, became mütesellim of Amasya, and Emîr Paşazâde es-Seyyid Fazlullah Bey became cizye (non-Muslim tax) collector of Amasya and Tokat.

In Ramazan, since a beylerbeyilik was given to Hasan Bey son of Osman Pasha of Canik, Bey of Amasya, the sanjak of Amasya was assigned as a has (private revenue) to Damat Şehriyârî Bayram Pasha, who served as kubbe vizier in Istanbul.

The End of the Incident: Trial and Pardon

The Georgian incident described in the previous entry reaches the stage of trial in this entry. According to Hüsâmeddin, fourteen notables of Amasya were summoned to Istanbul and all were put into the Yedikule Dungeon. Among these persons are the kadı and mufti of Amasya, the nakîb's deputy and many persons of the administrative staff of the time. The noteworthy point is that Hoca Ahmed Pasha explained the situation to the grand vizier and secured everyone's release. Hoca Ahmed Pasha's place in Amasya meets us repeatedly in these pages; in the entries ahead it is written that, dismissed while beylerbeyi of Trabzon, he returned to Amasya and was mütevelli of the sultanic waqfs here.

The grand vizier Hüsrev Pasha's being at Üsküdar at that time agrees with the timing of the event. According to an encyclopedia entry, Hüsrev Pasha crossed with his army to Üsküdar in July 1629 for a new campaign to the east; after the army reached Mosul it turned toward Baghdad, the city was besieged on 6 October 1630, and the siege lasted thirty-nine days and was inconclusive. Hüsâmeddin's phrase "the Mirliva Hasan Bey was assigned to the Baghdad War" relates to this campaign; Rebîülevvel 1039 falls roughly in the autumn of 1629, that is, it is an assignment made while the army was still on the road.

Osman Pasha of Canik and His Son

No information was found in other sources on Hasan Bey's father Osman Pasha of Canik. The name Canikli is better known from the Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha family, which gained power in Central and Northeastern Anatolia in the second half of the eighteenth century; according to the encyclopedia entry, this family's dominance in the region lasted from the mid-eighteenth century until the execution of Tayyar Mahmud Pasha in 1808. Whether any link is established between the Hasan Bey Hüsâmeddin mentions here and that family is not stated in the source; since more than a hundred and fifty years lie between, it would not be right to connect the two.

Hüsâmeddin shows that Hasan Bey's governorship was short: the bey who came to Amasya in Şevvâl 1038 rose to a beylerbeyilik in Ramazan 1039 and left the sanjak. The deed most noted from this term of office is his attempt to collect back from the people the goods plundered from Hüftâdî Bey's mansion. Hüsâmeddin writes that the amount collected did not even reach a third of what was plundered; this figure is the book's statement and has not been confirmed by another document.

Bayram Pasha's Coming to the Sanjak of Amasya

The giving of the sanjak of Amasya to Damat Bayram Pasha as a has, in the last sentence of the entry, is the subject of the next entry. Information on Bayram Pasha is given in that entry.
