Zilka’dede Sivas Beylerbeyi Çerkes Dilâver Paşa ansızın Amasya’ya geldi. İbrâz eylediği fermân-ı âlî üzerine Amasya’da menfiyyen ikâmet eden sâbık Kastamonu beylerbeyi Merzifonî Ahmed Paşa ile defterdârı Gevüklü Kara Mehmed Ağa’yı i’dâm etdirdi. Müteâkiben Sivas Defterdârı Ebû Bekir Efendi de gelip her ikisinin emvâl ü emlâkini kabz ve müsâdere etdi.

In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was a son of Alıç Bey son of Budak Bey, one of the descendants of Şâdgeldi Pasha. He had gone from the alaybeyliği of Amasya to being guardian of Erzurum Fortress. On the tenth day of Rebîülâhir 1042 [1632–33] he became sanjak bey of Amasya; in his own name his brother-in-law Ebû Bekir Bey son of Derviş Bey became mütesellim (deputy) of Amasya.

At this time, with the dismissal of the Alaybeyi of Amasya Abdurrahman Bey son of Memi Bey, Hasan Bey became alaybeyi; with the dismissal of the City Kethüdâ Bâlî Bey, Keklik el-Hâc Ahmed Ağa, one of the notables, became city kethüdâ; and in Receb Kuloğlu Mehmed Ağa became kethüdâyeri.

In Zilkade, Circassian Dilâver Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Sivas, came suddenly to Amasya. In accordance with an imperial decree he showed, he had Ahmed Pasha of Merzifon, former beylerbeyi of Kastamonu, who lived in exile in Amasya, and his defterdar Gevüklü Kara Mehmed Ağa executed. Afterward Ebû Bekir Efendi, Defterdar of Sivas, also came and seized and confiscated the goods and property of the two.

Seeing this, Bîçâre Murâd Ağa (Poor Murâd Ağa), formerly a customs emin, who had lived for years in exile in Amasya, suffered a stroke and died a day later. But his estate, which was considered of no importance, was left to his heirs. At this time Abaza Yûsuf Ağa of Bafra, one of the ağas of Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha, appointed to the Amasya nüzûl emâneti (the duty of collecting provisions for the army), came to Amasya.

At the beginning of Muharrem 1043 [1633–34], Kadı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi's term of office (müddet-i örfiyye) was extended. In the shadow of the fortune of the janissary ağa Köse Mehmed Ağa of Amasya, Köprülü Mehmed Ağa, who had been favored from Hüsrev Pasha's treasurership with the ihtisap emâneti (market inspectorship), came to the fore at the beginning of Safer as second mirâhur (master of the stables).

In Rebîülevvel, since the sanjak of Bâyezîd was given to Hüseyin Bey, guardian of Erzurum Fortress and Sanjak Bey of Amasya, the sanjak of Amasya was given to Mustafa Bey, bey of Çorum.

Punishments Carried Out in Amasya

The entry comes to the fore not through the sanjak bey but through the arrival in Amasya of Circassian Dilâver Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Sivas. According to Hüsâmeddin, the pasha, in accordance with an imperial decree, had two high-ranking persons living in exile in the city, Ahmed Pasha of Merzifon, former beylerbeyi of Kastamonu, and his defterdar Gevüklü Kara Mehmed Ağa, executed. The previous entry relates these two persons' coming to Amasya in exile. The book does not write for what offense the two were banished or why they were killed.

No other source confirming this event could be found. Looking at the encyclopedic biography of the grand vizier named Dilâver, one sees that the person who bore this name and served as grand vizier in 1621–22 was killed in 1622; the Dilâver Pasha who was beylerbeyi of Sivas in 1632–33 must therefore be a different person from that grand vizier. In the book too this pasha is called "Circassian," while the grand vizier Dilâver Pasha is recorded as being of Croatian origin. The two names must not be confused.

It is noteworthy that the fates of several persons are told in a chain in the text: first the execution of the two high-ranking persons, then the death by stroke of the former customs emin Bîçâre Murâd Ağa, who had been in exile in Amasya for years, on seeing it. Hüsâmeddin also writes separately that the property the deceased left behind was of no importance and so was left to his heirs. The selling of the confiscated goods and the sending of the proceeds to Istanbul is told in similar fashion in the entry two after this.

Köprülü Mehmed Ağa

The Köprülü Mehmed Ağa who appears near the end of the entry is most probably Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, later grand vizier; the book does not state this explicitly, but the treasurership and the Köprü connection point in this direction. According to the encyclopedia entry, this person was born in the village of Rudnik in the sanjak of Berat in Albania, was recruited and trained in the Enderun, served in the Hazîne-i Âmire (Imperial Treasury) in the time of Murad IV, went to the town of Köprü, attached to Amasya, married Ayşe Hanım and was called Köprülü. When Hüsrev Pasha became grand vizier he became his treasurer; Hüsâmeddin's phrase "Köprülü Mehmed Ağa, favored from Hüsrev Pasha's treasurership" agrees with this. The entry relates that he came to the fore as second mirâhur in the shadow of Köse Mehmed Ağa. The encyclopedia entry does not give details of this rise; it notes that after Hüsrev Pasha's killing he served briefly as sanjak bey of Amasya. According to Hüsâmeddin's records this post took place in 1044 (1634–35).

Detail on Köse Mehmed Ağa is given in the next entry. His being named here shows the relationship Hüsâmeddin calls "sâye-i ikbâl" (the shadow of fortune), that is, the janissary ağa's favoring persons in his own circle.

The Sanjak Beys

Hüseyin Bey's passage from the guardianship of Erzurum Fortress to the sanjak governorship of Amasya, and from there to the sanjak of Bâyezîd, takes place within a short time. The sanjak is a military term describing, in Ottoman administration, a part of the revenue of the timar system; Hüseyin Bey returns once more to the sanjak of Amasya in Şa'bân 1044, a development related in one of the next two entries.
