Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Amasyalıdır. Amasya’nın Helkis Mahallesi eşrâfından Alıç Bey’in mahdûmudur. 1044 senesi şa’bânının onuncu günü ikinci defa Amasya sancağı beyi oldu.⁶³⁸ Kendisi Erzurum Kalesi muhafazasında kalıp tarafından Hakâlalı Şâtır Ali Ağa bin Hamza Ağa Amasya mütesellimi oldu.

Ramazânda nakîbü’l-eşrâf kâ’im-makâmı ve Darbhâneci Tekkesi Şeyhi es-Seyyid Ahmed Efendi, ba‘dehû şehir kethüdâsı Keklîk el-Hâc Ahmed Ağa, bunları müteâkib efâzıl-ı ulemâdan üstâdü’l-küll Kadızâde Küçük Hoca Mehmed İlmî Efendi vefât etdi.

Bunların yerlerine es-Seyyid Ca’fer Efendi nakîbü’l-eşrâf kâ’im-makâmı, meşâyih-i Şâbâniye’den eş-Şeyh Mehmed Efendi Darbhâneci Tekkesi şeyhi, a‘yândan Bâlî Bey şehir kethüdâsı, meşâhir-i fuzalâdan Gürcü el-Hâc Hasan Efendi Sultân Bâyezîd kürsü şeyhi oldu.

Şevvâlin dokuzuncu günü Dördüncü Sultân Murâd Hân Revân [71] Seferi için Üsküdar’dan hareket etdi. Maiyyetinde Amasyalılardan Rumeli Kazaskeri Hocazâde Abdullah Efendi ile İmam-ı Sultânî Evliyâ Mehmed Efendi vardı. Evliyâ Mehmed Efendi, Konya’da hastalandığından İstanbul’a döndü. Zilka’dede vefât etdi.

Bu esnada Hızır Paşa Evkâfı Mütevellisi Keyvânzâde Mustafa Bey bin Rüstem Bey’in vefâtına binâen tevliyet-i mezbûre kızı Nâzenîn Hanım uhdesine tevcîh edildi. Bunun zevci Tokat Voyvodası ve Amasya beytü’l-mâl emîni Zülfikâr Bey mütevellî kâ’im-makâmı oldu. Hâlbuki oğlu zu‘amâ’dan Hızır Bey harbe gitmişdi.

Zilhicce evâilinde Amasya Kethüdâyeri Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa maiyetiyle beraber Erzurum’a doğru hareket etdi. Fakat altıncı günü Sultân Murâd Sivas’a geldi. On beş gün kadar kalıp her taraftan koşan askerler orduya iltihâk ederek yirmi birinde Sivas’tan Erzurum’a hareket etdi.

Bîçâre Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa, Ordu-yı Hümâyûn’a ancak Erzurum civarında Ilıca nâm mevkide iltihâk edebildiğinden vardığı anda Sultân Murâd’ın emriyle kellesi uçtu. Çünkü tembîh-i âlî, Amasya sipâhilerinin Sivas’ta Ordu-yı Hümâyûn’a iltihâk etmesiydi.

Bu esnada Seydî Beyzâde Mustafa Bey’in mahdûmu Abdullah ve yeğeni Kurd Mehmed Bey’ler, Zülfikâr Bey’in gaybûbetinden bil-istifâde Hızır Paşa tevliyetini talep ederek Nâzenîn Hanım aleyhine davaya kıyâm etmişlerdi.

Çünkü Seydî Beyzâde Ahmed Bey’in oğulları Mustafa, Mehmed beylerle Ali Paşa Mehmed Paşazâde Hüseyin Bey’in kerîmesi Ayşe Hanım’dan mütevellîd idiler. Vâkıfın evlâd-ı inâsı mevcut iken tevliyet evlâd-ı utekâya gitmez diyorlar. Keyvanzâdeler de bunların evlâd-ı inâstan olduğunu inkâr ediyorlardı. Her iki taraf da zî-nüfûs idi.

Kezâlik yine bu esnada Yörgüç Paşa Evkâfı mütevellîsi Hakalâcı Mustafa Bey mürtezika-ı vakfa gadr ve vakfa hıyânet etdiği davasıyla bilmuhâkeme azl edilerek yerine Yörgüç Paşazâde Mehmed Bey bin Hasan Bey mütevellî oldu.

1045 senesi gurre-i muharreminde Erzurum Kalesi Muhâfızı ve Amasya Beyi Hüseyin Bey, Sultân Murâd’ın nazar-ı dikkat ve takdîrini celp edecek yararlıklar gösterdiğinden Kars beylerbeyi olup Amasya sancağı orduda bulunan Mirlivâ Derviş Bey’e tevcîh edildi.

In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was a son of Alıç Bey, one of the notables of the Helkis Neighborhood of Amasya. On the tenth day of Şaban 1044 [1634–35] he became sanjak bey of Amasya for the second time. Since he remained guarding Erzurum Fortress, in his name Şâtır Ali Ağa of Hakâla, son of Hamza Ağa, became mütesellim (deputy) of Amasya.

In the month of Ramazan the nakîbü'l-eşrâf deputy and sheikh of the Darbhâneci Tekke, Seyyid Ahmed Efendi, then the city kethüdâ Keklik Hacı Ahmed Ağa, and following them Kadızâde Küçük Hoca Mehmed İlmî Efendi, one of the foremost of the scholars and master of every branch of learning, died.

In their places Seyyid Cafer Efendi became nakîbü'l-eşrâf deputy, Şeyh Mehmed Efendi, one of the Şâbâniye sheikhs, sheikh of the Darbhâneci Tekke, Bâlî Bey, one of the notables, city kethüdâ, and Gürcü Hacı Hasan Efendi, one of the well-known men of merit, kürsü sheikh (lecturing scholar) of the Sultan Bayezid.

On the ninth day of Şevval Murad Khan the Fourth set out from Üsküdar for the Revan Campaign. In his retinue from among the people of Amasya were the Kazasker of Rumeli Abdullah Efendi son of Hoca and the sultan's imam Evliyâ Mehmed Efendi. Evliyâ Mehmed Efendi fell ill at Konya and returned to Istanbul and died in the month of Zilkade.

At this time, when Mustafa Bey son of Keyvân, mütevelli of the Hızır Pasha Waqf, son of Rüstem Bey, died, the said trusteeship was given to his daughter Nâzenîn Hanım. Nâzenîn Hanım's husband, Zülfikâr Bey, voyvoda of Tokat and beytülmal emini of Amasya, became deputy mütevelli. Yet her son, the zeamet holder Hızır Bey, had gone to war.

At the beginning of Zilhicce the Amasya kethüdâyeri Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa set out with his retinue toward Erzurum. But on the sixth day Sultan Murad came to Sivas. After he had stayed there some fifteen days and the soldiers hurrying in from every side had joined the army, on the twenty-first of the month he set out from Sivas for Erzurum.

Poor Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa could join the sultan's army only near Erzurum, at a place called Ilıca, and the moment he arrived he was beheaded by Sultan Murad's order. For the high order was that the sipahis of Amasya should join the army at Sivas.

This lateness of Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa cost him his head. Köprülü Mehmed Bey, for the same lateness, had been spared by merely being dismissed. Since Ali Pasha of Besni, Governor of Sivas, was also executed, Kazovalı İbrahim Pasha son of Mehmed, known as "Kör hazinedar" (the blind treasurer), became beylerbeyi of Sivas, and Şeyhî Mehmed Bey of Amasya, one of the sipahis, became kethüdâyeri of Amasya.

At this time Abdullah, son of Mustafa Bey son of Seydî Bey, and his nephew Kurd Mehmed Bey, taking advantage of Zülfikâr Bey's absence, asked for the Hızır Pasha trusteeship and brought a suit against Nâzenîn Hanım.

For the sons of Seydî Beyzâde Ahmed Bey, Mustafa and Mehmed Beys, had been born of Ayşe Hanım, daughter of Hüseyin Bey son of Mehmed Pasha, son of Ali Pasha. They said that, since the founder had female grandchildren (evlâd-ı inâs), the trusteeship could not pass to the line of the freed slaves (evlâd-ı utekâ). The Keyvânzâdes did not accept that these were of the female line. Both sides were influential persons.

Again at this time Mustafa Bey the Hakalâcı, mütevelli of the Yörgüç Pasha Waqf, was tried on the allegation that he had wronged those who received shares from the waqf and had betrayed the waqf, and was dismissed; in his place Mehmed Bey son of Yörgüç Paşazâde Hasan Bey became mütevelli.

At the beginning of Muharrem 1045 [1635–36], Hüseyin Bey, guardian of Erzurum Fortress and Bey of Amasya, having shown services that drew Sultan Murad's attention and appreciation, became beylerbeyi of Kars. The sanjak of Amasya was given to the mirliva Derviş Bey, who was in the army.

The Revan Campaign and the Sipahis of Amasya

The text relates Murad IV's Revan campaign through the eyes of Amasya. The sultan set out from Üsküdar on 9 Şevval 1044 (28 March 1635), and along the road punished kadıs, viziers and tobacco smokers who neglected their duty. He reached Sivas in May, Erzurum became the army's gathering place, and the sultan arrived here on 3 July. The detail Hüsameddin gives agrees with this general picture: the army was asked to gather at Sivas, and those who were late were severely punished. The execution of Kırmacı Mehmed Ağa could not be found in another source; this information rests only on Hüsameddin's record.

It is understood that Köprülü Mehmed Bey, who was spared by being dismissed despite his lateness, is Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, later grand vizier. According to the encyclopedia entry, this man settled in Vezirköprü, served as sanjak bey of Amasya, took part in the 1638 Baghdad campaign as sanjak bey of Çorum, and became grand vizier in 1656. The entry also counts the fourth volume of the Amasya Tarihi among its sources. Hüsameddin too, in describing the Baghdad war, mentions the same person as Bey of Çorum.

Hüseyin Bey and the Changes of Sanjak

According to the footnote, Hüseyin Bey later paid with his head for the effort described in the previous entry, that is, for having Köprülü Mehmed Bey dismissed. This detail is taken up in Hüsameddin's later pages. No information was found in other sources on Alıç Bey and his family in the Helkis Neighborhood. That the sanjak of Amasya was given to four persons in a short time, Köprülü Mehmed Bey, Hüseyin Bey, Derviş Bey and then Elkâs Bey, suggests how brief sanjak governorship was in this period and that the day-to-day administration mostly remained in the hands of mütesellims.

Waqf Lawsuits

The second half of the text relays the contention over waqf administrations in Amasya. The trusteeship of the Hızır Pasha Waqf first passes to Nâzenîn Hanım, daughter of Keyvânzâde Mustafa Bey, and her husband Zülfikâr Bey becomes deputy; since her son Hızır Bey was at war, the Seydî Beyzâdes bring a suit. The heart of the argument is the priority right to the trusteeship of those descended from the founder through daughters. The suit does not end with this entry: in later entries Hüsameddin relates that Hızır Bey obtained the post through the court, that after his death in Baghdad the Seydî Beyzâdes seized the waqf, and that in the end Hızır Bey's nephew Kurd Mustafa Bey became mütevelli. A change of mütevelli is repeated in the Yörgüç Pasha Waqf too. No information was found in other sources on the administration of either waqf in this period.
