In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Mustafa Bey, one of the beys, son of İbrâhim Pasha bin Ali Bey. While one of the leading holders of zeamets (large military fiefs), he became sanjak governor. In 1099 [1687-88], pursued in the Yeğen Osman Pasha affair, he went into hiding. He later came out and died in 1104 [1692-93]. His brother Mehmed Bey had also been pursued at the time of Kara İbrâhim Pasha's dismissal from the grand vizierate.

Old Words in the Text

  • ümerâ: beys

  • mîr-livâ: sanjak governor
  • ta'kîb: pursuit, prosecution
  • azl: dismissal from office

The Yeğen Osman Pasha Affair

Yeğen Osman Pasha, named in the entry, was the nephew of Kara İbrâhim Pasha (see the Bayburdluzâde entry, 6-132). According to the encyclopedia and historical records, Osman Pasha became head of the Anatolian sekbans and in 1687 is mentioned briefly as beylerbeyi of Rumelia. Sarı Süleyman Pasha, who took Kara İbrâhim Pasha's place, grew suspicious of the movements of the former grand vizier's nephew Osman Pasha and his men; he confiscated Kara İbrâhim Pasha's goods, exiled him to Rhodes and had him killed. Hüsameddin's sentence "Gürcüzâde Mehmed Bey and others were pressed" (6-132) and the sentence in this entry, "his brother Mehmed Bey had also been pursued", appear to describe the same distress. In this entry the event is dated 1099, whereas in the Bayburdluzâde entry the confiscation is given as 1097; the difference in dates may stem from the prosecutions lasting several years or from Hüsameddin taking his dates from different records.

The Gürcüzâdes

The name "Gürcüzâde" denotes several separate branches in Amasya. In a later entry of Hüsameddin, Halîl Bey-Gürcüzâde appears as kethüda yeri (deputy steward) in 1079, then voyvoda of Tokat, and in 1084 as beytülmal emini (commissioner of the treasury) of Amasya. The cousins of Dâyezâde İbrâhim Pasha are also known in Amasya as the "Gürcüzâdes" (6-150). Which of these İbrâhim Bey in this entry was related to cannot be understood from the text.
