In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of İsmâil Ağa bin İbrâhim Çelebi bin Halîl Çelebi bin Mehmed Çelebi, one of the notables of Amasya living in Istanbul near Küçük Ayasofya. His lineage goes back to Gümüşlüzâde Hazret-i Pîr İlyâs Halvetî. When Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha came to Amasya in 1069 [1658-59], he attached himself to him and joined his ağas.

In 1072 [1661-62], during the said pasha's grand vizierate, he was appointed kapıcılar kethüdâsı (steward of the gatekeepers); in 1078 [1667-68] he became beylerbeyi of Eğri, and on the twentieth of Zilkade 1079 [April 1669] mutasarrıf of Bursa; then, for his service in the conquest of Kamaniçe, in 1086 [1675-76] he became commander (muhafız) of Kamaniçe with the rank of vizier, and on the sixth of Muharrem 1087 [March 1676] commander of Temeşvar. (Zübdetü'l-Vâkı'ât)

In Cemâziyelevvel 1090 [1679] he became governor of Erzurum, in early Cemâziyelâhir 1092 [1681] of Baghdad, and in Rebiülevvel 1095 [March 1684] of Damascus. He made Rahtuvân Mehmed Ağa the mütesellim of Damascus. He went from Baghdad to Damascus with his kethüda Derviş Mehmed Ağa.

In Muharrem 1096 [December 1684] he set out for Üsküdar to cross to Rumelia for the Hungarian war. When he entered it, he fell into difficulty as his kethüda took the money he had collected and fled into hiding. Although the complaints from Damascus were settled and he was left in his post, because he demanded campaign expenses he was dismissed from Damascus on the twenty-eighth of Cemâziyelevvel 1096 [April 1685] and sent from Edirne to Tekfurdağı. (Silahdâr Tarihi)

On the twenty-sixth day of Rebiülâhir 1097 [March 1686] his standing was restored with his vizierate preserved; the sanjaks of Maraş, Kars and Amasya were given into his hands "as arpalık", and he became commander of İstanköy. The grand vizier Sarı Süleyman Pasha gave him five thousand kuruş as an allowance from the treasury and sent him off with a sable fur. (Silahdâr Tarihi)

In Safer 1099 [December 1687-January 1688], in place of Gürcü İbrâhim Pasha, he became commander of Temeşvar for the second time, in 1100 [1688-89] of Sofia, and in 1101 [1689-90] of Eğriboz, remaining there for quite some time. In 1102 [1690-91] he became serdar of the Morea, and in 1107 [1695-96] serdar of Hungary and commander of Belgrade, and was dismissed on the twenty-second day of Safer 1108 [September 1696].

On the eighteenth of Rebiülevvel 1108 [October 1696] he became kaymakam of Istanbul; on the third day of Rebiülevvel 1109 [October 1697], called from Belgrade, he became yeniçeri ağası, and on the nineteenth day of Ramazan commander of the Bosphorus, and came to Istanbul. On the seventeenth day of Safer 1110 [August 1698] he became governor of Konya, in Şaban for the second time of Erzurum, and in 1112 [1700-01] of Van, and died there in Cemâziyelevvel 1113 [October 1701].

He was a brave, prudent vizier who had served religion and state. He married the daughter of Hocazâde Abdullatîf Efendi of Amasya, and the sons born of her were Abdullatîf and Abdurrahîm Bey. It is recorded in the Cihat Defterleri that in Amasya he assigned a lectureship (dersiyye) to the tomb of his grandfather Pîr İlyâs Halvetî, had a fountain built in the precinct of the tomb, and arranged its waqfs.

In his Sicill-i Osmânî, Süreyyâ Bey confused the biographies of Dramalı İbrâhim Pasha bin Abdullah, who became vizier from the post of yeniçeri ağası; Gürcü İbrâhim Pasha bin Pîrî Ağa, who became vizier from the post of kethüda of the grand vizierate; and Gümüşlüzâde Çelebi İbrâhim Pasha bin İsmâil Ağa, who became beylerbeyi and then vizier from the post of kapıcılar kethüdâsı, and he merged the latter two.

Pîr İlyâs and the Gümüşlüzâdes

The name "Gümüşlüzâde" in the entry is tied to Pîr İlyâs (Şücâeddîn İlyâs, d. 1433), who brought the Halvetî order to Amasya; he is called "Gümüşlüzâde" or "Gümüşlüoğlu". Pîr İlyâs's tomb in Amasya was built by Bayezid II in 1482 (887), and its inscription calls him "leader of those near and far, pole of the great sheikhs". One of the first tekkes of the Halvetî order in Anatolia is the Gümüşlüoğlu Tekke, named after him. İbrâhim Pasha's endowing a lectureship and a fountain to Pîr İlyâs's tomb is, according to Hüsameddin's record, written in the Cihat Defterleri; in some sources it is also mentioned that in 1688 Gümüşlüzâde İbrâhim Pasha had the Gümüşlü Mosque in Amasya repaired and increased its waqfs. The Çilehane Tekke, close to Pîr İlyâs's tomb, was built in 1413 by Yakup Pasha, emir of Çelebi Mehmed.

The Sequence of Ranks

The pasha's list of posts is a typical example of the provincial governors whom grand viziers raised from among their ağas in the Köprülü period: kapıcılar kethüdâlığı, beylerbeyilik, the commands of Kamaniçe and Temeşvar, then the governorships of Erzurum, Baghdad, Damascus, Konya and Van. Hüsameddin indicates in parentheses that he took much of this long chain of posts from sources such as the Silahdâr Tarihi and the Zübdetü'l-Vâkı'ât. Of these, the Silahdâr Tarihi is the work of Silahdâr Mehmed Ağa, and the Zübdetü'l-Vekayiât that of Defterdar Sarı Mehmed Pasha. The pasha was appointed to his second command of Temeşvar in place of Gürcü İbrâhim Pasha, who was killed in 1099 (6-134).

The Three İbrâhim Pashas Confused by Süreyyâ Bey

The last sentence of the entry is an important correction. Hüsameddin reports that in the Sicill-i Osmânî the biographies of Dramalı İbrâhim Pasha, Gürcü (Pîrîzâde) İbrâhim Pasha and Gümüşlüzâde İbrâhim Pasha were confused with one another, and that the latter two were merged as if one person. For this reason, when the name "İbrâhim Pasha" appears in the sources, care is needed as to which one is meant. That the last two pashas were from Amasya and that both served as commander of Temeşvar appears to have made this confusion easier.
