In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Ömer Efendi bin Mehmed Çelebi, one of the mevâlî (senior kadıs and madrasa professors). He studied in Amasya and received the authorization to give public lectures; when his father became molla of Erzurum in 1058 [1648], he became müderris of Torumtay in his place at a young age. He then received the rank of a müderris of Istanbul (ru'ûs), accepted a judgeship, and went around various places.

In the meantime he served as kadı of Amasya, Sivas and Şarkî Karahisar, and in 1106 [1694-95] became müderris of the Fatıma Hatun madrasa with the rank of sahn. He died in 1108 [1696-97]. He was a scholar, a writer in the ta'lik script, and one of the rotating mevâlî. His son too is Mehmed Efendi. They were also called "Kadızâdes".

The Mevâlî and the Title of Molla

In the Ottoman ilmiye system, "molla" was the title given to scholars who, after service as madrasa professors, reached the rank of mevleviyet, and to the great judgeships paid above a certain amount; the sahn mollas were also included in this class. Ömer Efendi's being molla of Erzurum was therefore a high office. His son İbrâhim's becoming a müderris at a young age in the same madrasa circle also appears to rest on his father's standing.

The Madrasas Mentioned

The Torumtay Madrasa is a Seljuk work with the functions of mosque, tomb and madrasa, built in 1267 by Seyfeddin Torumtay, governor of Amasya; because its mausoleum is decorated with turquoise tiles it is also called the Gökmedrese. The Fatıma Hatun Madrasa, also known by the names Hatuniye and Fatımiye, is one of the important madrasas of Amasya. İbrâhim Efendi's serving in these two buildings at the beginning and end of his life links two separate madrasas of historic Amasya. The nickname "Kadızâdes" also rests on the judgeship tradition of father and son; no record was found, apart from Hüsameddin, on the details of the family.
