In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of es-Seyyid Hasan Çelebi bin es-Seyyid Haydar Efendi bin es-Seyyid Şemseddîn Ahmed Efendi bin es-Seyyid Muhyiddîn Mehmed el-Havzavî. He was one of the notables of the seyyid families. In 1099 [1687-88], because he spoke out a great deal in the Emîr incident, he was exiled (menkûb), and then died. His brother es-Seyyid Mahmûd Çelebi was also well known. His son in turn is es-Seyyid el-Hâc İbrâhim Efendi.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • es-Seyyid: the title given to descendants of the Prophet
  • a'yân-ı sâdât: the notables of the seyyid families
  • Emîr vak'ası: the Emîr incident, an event in Amasya in 1099 that is not separately explained in the text
  • sâhib-i kelâm: one whose word carries weight, one who speaks much
  • menkûb: sent into exile, struck by misfortune
  • merhûm: deceased

The Seyyids of Havza

The chain of descent listed in the entry shows that in Hüsameddin's book the seyyid families of Amasya are documented by genealogies (silsilename). Those descending from Seyyid Muhyiddîn Mehmed el-Havzavî are counted among the seyyids of Amasya, and their names appear in other entries of Hüsameddin as well. In the Ottoman Empire, being a seyyid was a registered status under the supervision of officials called nakîbüleşrâf; it is known that seyyid inspections were carried out in the Amasya, Sivas and Çorum regions and that the privileges of those who could not document their descent were removed.

The 1099 Incident

What the "Emîr incident" for which İbrâhim Çelebi was exiled was is not explained in this entry of the book. The same event is mentioned indirectly in the following entries: Hacı İmâm İbrâhim Efendi was removed from his post in the Emîrler incident in 1099 and went to the Hejaz (6-141). In a study of the Halvetî tekkes, it is written that the sheikh of the Çevikçe Tekke in Amasya was removed from office on the grounds that he was involved in the events of 1099 (1688). These records suggest that in 1688 an event affecting the circle of the clergy and the seyyids took place in Amasya. Since seyyids were also called "emîr" in Anatolia, it comes to mind that the event concerned the seyyid group, but this is an inference; no clear account of the nature of the event was found. The date falls in the same period as the 1687-88 turmoil at the center of the state; whether there is a link between them cannot be understood from the sources.

Relatives with the Same Name

The son of Hasan Çelebi's brother Mahmûd Çelebi also bears the name İbrâhim; in the book the biography of this second İbrâhim Efendi is a separate entry (6-143). Since uncle and nephew bear the same name, the records should not be confused.
