What a Müjdecibaşı Did
The surre procession set out from Üsküdar each year on the twelfth of Receb, carrying money and gifts for the needs of the people of Mecca and Medina before the pilgrimage season. At the head of the procession were officials such as the emin, the kethüda and the clerk. In this arrangement the müjdecibaşı was the person whose task was to announce the caravan's departure and return to the regional administrators; the prayer and thanks letters of the Sharif of Mecca were also delivered to the sultan through him. İbrâhim Çelebi carried out this task for more than fifteen years.
The Müjdecizâdes
In a later entry of Hüsameddin's book, Şevkî Yûsuf Efendi appears as the son of the Amasya müjdecibaşı el-Hâc Yûsuf Ağa; this shows that the family name continued in Amasya. Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, to whom İbrâhim Çelebi attached himself, was the son of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha and served as grand vizier between 1661 and 1676. No separate record was found about Yûsuf Pasha, one of the grandchildren named in the entry, or about later branches of the family.
