In Modern English

He was from Amasya, a son of the scholar Mehmed İlmî Efendizâde Abdullatîf Efendi, known as "Kadızâde Küçük Hoca". He learned the science of tajwid and the modes of recitation from Mehmed Efendi bin Ali, known as "Ders-i âm Hâfız", the head of the Qur'an reciters, and after studying the other sciences as well, in 1075 [1664-65] he became second imam of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque and head of the dârülkurrâ. His brother Hâfız Halîl Efendi had become first imam of the same mosque in 1082 [1671-72]. When Hâfız İbrâhim Efendi died in early Receb 1092 [1681], the post of imam was given to his son Hâfız Mehmed Efendi. He was a scholar with a beautiful voice and recitation, faithful to the sharia, and one of the well-known hâfızes among the reciters.

The Bayezid Complex and the Dârülkurrâ

The Sultan Bayezid Mosque is the mosque of the complex built in the name of Bayezid II during Prince Ahmed's tenure as sanjak governor of Amasya; the complex consists of a mosque, a madrasa, an imaret and a tabhâne, and according to its inscription was completed in 1486. The post of imam in this mosque was counted among the prestigious positions of Amasya. The dârülkurrâ, for its part, was a separate educational institution in the Ottoman Empire where the methods of reciting the Qur'an were taught. According to one study there were nine dârülkurrâs in Amasya, and the Sultan Bayezid dârülkurrâ alone had more than three hundred hâfızes.

Family

The entry shows the imamate passing among father, brother and son: İbrâhim Efendi becomes second imam, his brother Halîl becomes first imam, and at İbrâhim's death the post is given to his son. This is a continuity often seen in Ottoman waqf positions and frequently supported by a condition in the waqf deed. No detailed record apart from Hüsameddin was found about İbrâhim Efendi's teacher Mehmed Efendi bin Ali, nicknamed "Ders-i âm Hâfız", or about his father Abdullatîf Efendi.
