Köprülüdür. Meşâyîh-i kudâtdan Köprülü Mahmûd Efendi’nin mahdûmudur. Amasya’da “Uzun Müderris” demekle meşhûr fuzalâdan Hâfız Mehmed Efendi’den ikmâl-i tahsîl edib ders-i âm oldu. Ba’dehû müderris, kadı olup devr-i kasabât ederek 1090 hudûdunda vefât etdi.

He was from Köprü. He was the son of Köprülü Mahmud Efendi, one of the leading kadıs (judges). He completed his education under Hâfız Mehmed Efendi, one of the scholars of Amasya known as "Uzun Müderris" (the Tall Madrasa Professor), and received the authorization to give public lectures. He then went from district to district as müderris and kadı, and died around 1090 [1679].

Köprü and the Köprülüs

The word "Köprülü" in the entry refers to Köprü (today's Vezirköprü), one of the important towns of the sanjak of Amasya. The grand vizier Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, son of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, was born in this town in 1045 [1635-36]. It is also known that Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha was raised in his youth under the protection of Köprülü Mehmed Bey, the sanjak governor of Amasya, and studied in a madrasa together with his sons. Köprü was thus a place that produced both viziers and scholars in the seventeenth century; whether İbrâhim Efendi's father Mahmud Efendi was related to the vizier family cannot be understood from the text.

His Teacher and Himself

Hüsameddin refers to İbrâhim Efendi's teacher Hâfız Mehmed Efendi by the nickname "Uzun Müderris". An Amasya madrasa professor known by this nickname also appears in studies on seventeenth-century scholars; however, the sources do not state explicitly that this person and the Hâfız Mehmed Efendi mentioned by Hüsameddin are the same. No information about İbrâhim Efendi or his father was found outside Hüsameddin. The text therefore remains a short biographical note: education, madrasa professorship, service as kadı, and the date of death.
