In Modern English

He was a Köprülü man. He was the son of el-Hâc Mehmed Ağazâde Yûsuf Ağa, brother-in-law and kethüda of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha; he was called "Dedezâde." He entered the kethüda office at the Sublime Porte and rose. Under the grand vizierate of Ammizâde Hüseyin Pasha he became kethüda clerk, and in 1110 [1698-99] he became tezkireci of the grand vizierate. He became known by the title tezkireci.

In 1114 [1702-03] he was dismissed after the resignation of that grand vizier. In Rabiulevvel 1115 [1703], at the accession of Sultan Ahmed III Han, he became tezkireci again. In 1122 [1710-11], under the grand vizierate of Osmancıklı Baltacı Mehmed Pasha, he became kethüda of the grand vizier, and upon that vizier's dismissal he became tezkireci of the grand vizierate again. At the beginning of 1127 [1715], because the martyred Grand Vizier Ali Pasha had taken offense at him, he became clerk of the sipahis; in the month of Ramadan he went to the Morea as tahrir official there.

In the middle of 1128 [1716] he was appointed to the first ruznamçe post. In Dhu al-Qa'dah of the same year, when Grand Vizier Ali Pasha fell as a martyr and Halil Pasha became grand vizier, he became kethüda of the grand vizier for the second time. In Jumada al-Akhirah 1129 [1717] he became kapıcılar kethüdası with the rank of Rumelia, immediately afterward mîrahur (head of the palace stables), and in the month of Sha'ban acting kaymakam of the sultan's army with the rank of vizier.

In Shawwal 1129 he became warden of Sofia, and in Dhu al-Qa'dah warden of Chania. But because of the ill intent toward him of Grand Vizier Kayserili Mehmed Pasha, he asked for retirement; when it was granted he saved his life. He was allowed to reside in Tekfurdağı.

In 1132 [1719-20], through the efforts of Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damad İbrahim Pasha, he was made warden of Yenikale and Bender with his vizierate preserved, in 1133 [1720-21] he became governor of Eğriboz, and he died there in Sha'ban 1134 [1722]. He was a vizier capable in "untying and binding," that is, in running the state, well versed in affairs of state, gentle in temperament, calm and dignified, a protector of knowledge and of those who have it. For this reason he had suffered the pressure and contempt of the powerful viziers of his day.

Dedezâde the Tezkireci

Hüsameddin writes that this vizier was a Köprülü man and that his father was the brother-in-law and kethüda of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha. In the book this relationship is mentioned as a tie of service and kinship with the Köprülü family; no detail is given.

The dates in the book fall into place when read alongside the known events of the period. Nevşehirli Damad İbrahim Pasha took part in 1127 [1715] in Damad Ali Pasha's Morea campaign as mevkûfatçı, and after the Morea was retaken he was charged with its survey. That Dedezâde İbrahim went to the Morea in the same year as tahrir official in the text coincides with the period when this census work was carried out. Damad İbrahim Pasha became grand vizier on 8 Jumada al-Akhirah 1130 [9 May 1718]. The "Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Dâmâd İbrâhim Pasha" that Hüsameddin mentions for 1132, that is, the person who helped preserve his vizierate, is precisely this grand vizier. The note at the end of the text, "died at Eğriboz," is dated 1134 [1721-22]; Damad İbrahim Pasha's grand vizierate was to end with the Patrona rebellion in 1143 [1730].

The frequent dismissals and reappointments in the pasha's sequence of offices can be read as a consequence of the fact that in that period clerks and kethüdas changed places whenever the grand vizier changed. This is an interpretation; Hüsameddin gives the reasons himself: first the grand vizier's resignation, then another grand vizier's displeasure, and finally the ill intent of Kayserili Mehmed Pasha.

No detail on the life of Dedezâde İbrahim Pasha was found in any source other than Hüsameddin. The same nickname "Dedezâde" is used in entry 169 for another İbrâhim Pasha, kethüda of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Abdullah Pasha; the book draws no link between the two.
