In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya, the son of Küçük Gürcü Ali Beyzâde Mustafa Bey, the alaybeyi of Amasya.

His mother was the wet nurse of Sultan Ahmed III, who was born in Ramadan 1082, and for this reason he became known as "Dâyezâde." At his mother's request he entered the Enderun, where he learned scholarship and courtly manners.

For a time he joined the ranks of the aghas at the sultan's gate as dülbend ağası. When Sultan Mustafa II came to the throne in 1106 [1694-95] he became çuhadar ağası, and in 1110 [1698-99] he became silahdar. However, because he had worked to ensure that Grand Vizier Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha alone held the say and to break the influence of Şeyhülislam es-Seyyid Feyzullah Efendi, he was retired in Shawwal 1112 [March-April 1701].

After twelve years in retirement, his retirement was ended in Shawwal 1124 [November 1712] with his appointment as nişancı, at the direction of Kapıcızâde el-Hâc Ahmed Pasha of Amasya, who held the rank of vizier and was kaptan-ı deryâ and kaymakam of Istanbul.

In 1125 [1713] he was charged with determining the Ottoman-Russian border and went there. When he returned having done the task well, he became nişancı for the second time in Shawwal 1126 [October 1714]. But shortly after his patron was executed in Safar 1127 [February 1715] he was dismissed and remained without office for about three years.

In Rabiulevvel 1130 [February 1718], under the guidance and patronage of Nevşehirli İbrâhim Pasha, he became the Ottoman plenipotentiary for the Austrian peace talks and second defterdar, and in Rabiulâhir 1131 [March 1719] he went to Vienna as ambassador to Austria with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumelia. After his return he died in 1133 [1720-21]. He is buried in the courtyard of the Atîk Ali Pasha Mosque. (Sources: Sicill, Râşid, Silahdâr)

He was well-mannered, upright, versed in politics and learned, and he was a renowned calligrapher, a pupil of Derviş Ahmed Tokadî. His sons, Mustafa Bey and Abdullah Bey, were called "Elçi Paşazâde" (sons of the ambassador Pasha). His cousins' descendants are known in Amasya as the "Gürcüzâdes."

From Foster-Brother to Ambassador

Dâyezâde İbrâhim Pasha was an Ottoman statesman of Georgian origin. His mother's service as wet nurse to Ahmed III gave rise to his nickname, and he was educated in the Enderun. The chain of offices Hüsameddin gives (dülbend ağalığı, çuhadarlık, silahdarlık, nişancılık) matches the sequence "çuhadarlık, silahtarlık, nişancılık" found in other sources. Becoming second defterdar in 1718, he was regarded as the first Ottoman representative at the Passarowitz peace talks, and after the treaty he was sent to Vienna as ambassador with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumelia. After the Treaty of Passarowitz an exchange of ambassadors was envisaged, which is why this embassy carried particular importance. It is noted that on his return he wrote a sefaretname (embassy report).

Hüsameddin's Correction

In footnote 8 Hüsameddin makes a correction concerning Müstakimzâde, the author of Tuhfetü'l-Hattâtîn, who mentions İbrâhim Pasha as the "first plenipotentiary" at the Austrian peace of 1111. According to Hüsameddin, the man who performed that duty was Eğribozlu İbrâhim Pasha bin Osman, who never became silahdar and died at the beginning of 1120 while serving as warden of Belgrade. Dâyezâde's post as plenipotentiary to Austria dates to 1130. This is an example of two pashas with the same name being confused.

Date of Death and Calligraphy

For the date of death Hüsameddin gives 1133 [1720-21]; other sources write 1720 or 1721. His grave in the cemetery of the Atîk Ali Pasha Mosque is the same in both accounts. Hüsameddin mentions him as a calligrapher, a pupil of Derviş Ahmed Tokadî; no detail on his standing in this art or his works could be found in the sources. For Hüsameddin's other entries on the Gürcüzâdes, see 6-137.
