In Modern English
He was from the village of Avkat near the town of Mecidözü, the son of Süleyman. Attaching himself to Mustafa Paşazâde Ali Bey, one of the notables of Amasya, he became a holder of a zeamet (large military fief). He then won Ali Bey's affection and became his son-in-law by marrying his daughter Emine Hanım. Through this he came to the fore, several times becoming alaybeyi of Amasya, and in 1119 [1707-08] mütesellim (deputy governor) of Amasya.
After being removed from office he became alaybeyi of Amasya for the sixth time in 1121 [1709-10], and also married the widowed daughter of es-Seyyid Mustafa Bey, Deli Emîr Paşazâde. But because he was a rival of the nakîbüleşrâf kaymakamı (deputy of the head of the descendants of the Prophet) Emîr Hacı Abdullatîf Çelebi and of the mütesellim of Amasya, Yeğen el-Hâc Ali Bey, in Rebiülevvel 1124 [April-May 1712], on the ground that he "meddled in affairs of state", he was exiled to Samsun together with Fazlızâde Sarı Ali Efendi and imprisoned in the fortress.
After suffering there for about a year and a half, he was pardoned and returned to Amasya at the end of 1125 [1714], and died in 1127 [1715]. He was a wealthy and influential, brave and courageous bey.
The late man's sons by Emine Hanım were Mehmed, Süleyman and Ali Ağa, and his son by the daughter of es-Seyyid Mustafa Bey was es-Seyyid Mustafa Pasha.
The youngest son el-Hâc Ali Ağa inherited the Mecidözü farm and stayed there. The whole district of Mecidözü became the property of this man and his children. The other sons inherited their farms in the district of Geldiklân and their properties in Amasya.
The sons of Hacı Mehmed Ağa were el-Hâc İbrâhim and İsmâil Ağa. The sons of Hacı İsmâil Ağa were el-Hâc Mehmed and Ali Ağa; Hacı İbrâhim Ağa was among the notables of Istanbul. The sons of the second Hacı Mehmed Ağa were Hâseki Mehmed, Abdulkerîm and Abdullah Ağa, among the janissary notables. Hüseyin Ağa, son of Hâseki Mehmed Ağa, died childless in 1273 [1856-57].
The members of the meclis-i idâre (administrative council) were Mustafa and Mahmûd Ağa, sons of Hacı Abdulkerîm Ağa; when Mustafa Ağa died in 1285 [1868-69], his sons Ebûbekir and Abdulkerîm, and Hüseyin Ağa, son of Mahmûd Ağa, died in the Russian war of 1294 [1877-78]. They lived in the Hacı İlyâs quarter.
The second son of Avkatlı İbrâhim Ağa, el-Hâc Hâfız Süleyman Efendi, was among the scholars of Amasya; his son Hâfız Mehmed Efendi was a müderris and mufti in Isparta and preacher of the Halîl Hamîd Pasha Mosque, and died after the year 1200 [1785-86]. The third son el-Hâc Ali Ağa was among the kapıcıbaşıs (heads of palace gatekeepers) of the palace, and when he died in 1184 [1770-71] he was buried in Üsküdar. His sons were Ahmed Ağa and Fındık Mustafa Pasha.
Hacı Ahmed Ağa, while voyvoda of Mecidözü and mutasarrıf of his property, died in 1193 [1779], leaving his sons el-Hâc Ali and Mehmed Ağa. Fındık Mustafa Paşazâde Ahmed Hamdî and Süleyman Re'fet Bey, and Süleyman Beyzâde Mehmed Ârif and Ahmed Es'ad Bey remained in Istanbul. The children of the Hacı Ahmed Ağazâdes too were removed from Mecidözü (in 1241) [1825-26].
The fourth son of Avkatlı İbrâhim Ağa, es-Seyyid Mustafa Pasha, was among the beylerbeyis of Rumelia and remained for a long time as mutasarrıf of İzmit. Then in 1182 [1768-69] he left the beylerbeyiship of Şehr-i Zor, went to İzmit, and died there.

Mecitözü and the Avkatlızâdes
Avkat is the old name of today's district of Mecitözü; the town was founded on the flat ridges of two hills, near the village of Avkat. It is written in the sources that from 1728 Avkatlızâde el-Hâc Ali Ağa gained influence in the area and had a mosque, bath, school and a great mansion built in the village where he settled; this person is most likely Hüsameddin's "youngest son el-Hâc Ali Ağa". The family is the paternal line of Hacı Hafize Hanım, wife of Çapanoğlu Süleyman Bey: Hafize Hanım's father Mustafa Pasha served as mutasarrıf in places such as Kocaeli, Çorum, Kars and Maraş; Hüsameddin too mentions the same Mustafa Pasha as mutasarrıf of İzmit. Thus the records in the entry agree with local sources.
The Rivalry of Alaybeyi and Mütesellim
Avkatlı İbrâhim Ağa, who came to the fore as Ali Bey's son-in-law, was exiled to Samsun in 1124 because he was a rival of the nakîbüleşrâf kaymakamı and the mütesellim of Amasya. A local power struggle may lie behind the ground "meddling in affairs of state"; this is an inference. In Hüsameddin's book the exile in the same fortress is Fazlızâde Sarı Ali Efendi. The rest of the text enumerates the branches of the family scattered through Amasya, Mecidözü and Istanbul until the late nineteenth century. According to Hüsameddin's footnote, another son is Veli Ağa, and it is understood from a firman that he was voyvoda of Merzifon in 1140 [1727-28].
