In Modern English

He was from Amasya. After completing his education, in the exalted company of eş-Şeyh Musliheddîn Mustafa Efendi, one of the Şa'bâniyye sheikhs who died in 1072 [1661-62], he purified his inner world and received the khalifate. He returned to Amasya to teach and give guidance, performed this duty well for years and won the people's affection.

In 1112 [1700-01], on becoming sheikh of the Ahî Darphâneci Zaviye, he became for the first time sheikh of the tradesmen (esnaf). Guiding a great many people, he passed to the hereafter in Rebiülevvel 1123 [April-May 1711]. He was a scholar, one who had withdrawn from the world, of effective breath, a hâfız of the Qur'an, a man of spiritual knowledge, devout, God-fearing, and a long-lived elder (pîr).

His order's chain of descent, as seen in the tarikat-nâme, is as follows: "eş-Şeyh Musliheddîn Mustafa Efendi, eş-Şeyh İsmâil Efendi of Çorum, who died in Damascus, eş-Şeyh Ömer Fu'âdî Efendi, eş-Şeyh Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi of Kastamonu, eş-Şeyh Şa'bân-ı Velî (may God sanctify their secrets)." The following of his khalifes were famous: Güllü Şeyh Ahmed Efendi, İbrâhim Efendi, Sheikh of Eğincik, es-Seyyid Veliyüddîn Efendi, Sheikh of the Hoca Sultân Tekke, Sa'atcizâde eş-Şeyh Mehmed Efendi, and the müderris Abdîzâde es-Seyyid eş-Şeyh Ali Efendi. These are written in his silsile-nâme.

The Şabânî Order

The Şabâniyye is an order derived from the Cemâliyye branch of the Halvetî order; its founder is Sheikh Şa'bân-ı Velî, born in Taşköprü (Kastamonu). The Şabânî order spread in the region in the sixteenth century and in the seventeenth reached a wider geography through its khalifes. One of its khalifes, Hayreddîn-i Tokadî, was sent to Amasya. In the chain Hüsameddin lists, going back to Şa'bân-ı Velî, there are names such as Muhyiddîn Mehmed (of Kastamonu), Ömer Fu'âdî and İsmâil Efendi of Çorum. Musliheddîn Mustafa Efendi may not be the same person as Muslihuddîn Kastamonî, whose name appears among the khalifes of Şa'bân-ı Velî in one study, because Hüsameddin shows him four links away from Şa'bân-ı Velî. This identification could not be verified from the sources.

The Tradesmen's Sheikhship and the Darphâneci Zaviye

The esnaf sheikh was the spiritual head of the Ottoman tradesmen's guilds, descending from the tradition of ahîlik. When Hüsameddin says of İbrâhim Efendi that "for the first time he became sheikh of the tradesmen", he does not explain the meaning of this. No detail was found in studies examining the zaviyes of Amasya about the Ahî Darphâneci Zaviye. It may be thought that Abdîzâde es-Seyyid eş-Şeyh Ali Efendi, counted among his khalifes, belonged to the family of the book's author Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsâmeddîn; this is an inference.
