In Modern English

It could not be understood who he was. However, in Rabi al-Awwal of the year 973 [1565–66], Mehmed Bey was seen as bey of Amasya. At this time the alaybeyi of Amasya was Mehmed Bey, who was assigned to the Szigetvár campaign. Because of the merit he showed, an increase of one thousand two hundred akçe was given to his timar of sixteen thousand five hundred akçe.

When Süleyman the Magnificent died on the twenty-second night of Safar of the year 974 [1566–67], his son Selim II, coming from Manisa, ascended the Ottoman throne. He sent his son Sultan Murad for the first time to the governorship of Amasya.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • alaybeyisi: commander of the sipahi units
  • tımâr: source of revenue given to a sipahi in return for service
  • terakkî: advancement, increase
  • şehzâde: son of the sultan
  • vâlîlik: governance of a sanjak or province

The Change of Throne and Amasya

The entry is short, but it links two periods. With Süleyman's death Selim II passed to the Ottoman throne, and Amasya, as the account tells it, once again became a prince's sanjak. The TDV entry on Murad III also confirms that Süleyman died in 1566 and that Selim ascended the throne.

The text writes that Selim came "from Manisa." According to the TDV entry, however, Selim had become governor of Kütahya after the suppression of his brother Bayezid's rebellion; from which sanjak he set out in 1566 is not separately stated in that entry. Whether this difference is an error or a different record could not be verified. The information that Murad was sent to Amasya is itself disputed; its detail is given in the notes of the next entry.

No additional source was found for the participation of Mehmed Bey, alaybeyi of Amasya, in the Szigetvár campaign.
