He was a native of Amasya. He is the son of Hasan Pasha, son of Osman Pasha, son of Selamiş Bey. He was one of the emirs of Sultan Murad II and became warden of the Edirne Palace. He then became Bey of Silistra and died in the course of the year 847 [1443-44].

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • mahdûm: son
  • Sultân Murâd-ı Sânî: Murad the Second (Murad II)
  • ümerâ: emirs, beys
  • muhâfız: guardian, warden
  • Silistre Beyi: governor of the sanjak of Silistra, sanjak bey
  • hilâlinde: within, during; here it gives an approximate time (the month of the year cannot be understood)

Lineage and the Previous Entry

The text introduces the person whose name is not written (according to the heading, Üveys Bey) as the son of Hasan Pasha; the chain runs Hasan Pasha, Osman Pasha and Selamiş Bey. In the previous entry (421) Umûr Bey is likewise named as the son of Osman Pasha, son of Selamiş Bey. Accordingly Umûr Bey must be the brother of Hasan Pasha, the father of the person in this entry, that is, his uncle; this is an inference, and no such relationship is stated in the text. No information on Selamiş Bey and Osman Pasha was found in other sources. Nor was any information found on Üveys Bey's own life beyond the posts and dates given by Hüsameddin.

The Edirne Palace and Silistra

Since Murad II was sultan from 1421, Üveys Bey's posts fall between 1421 and the date of his death, but the years in which he was warden of the Edirne Palace and Bey of Silistra are not written in the text. Silistra was a frontier city on the Danube. The Ottoman army first took the city in 1388, and Mihaloğlu Fîruz Bey settled there as the first sanjak bey; after the Battle of Ankara it passed into the hands of Mircea, Voivode of Wallachia, and Çelebi Sultan Mehmed retook Silistra and all of Dobruja in the spring of 1419.

The Year 847

The year 847 in which Üveys Bey died is the year in which, in the month of Rajab (October 1443), the Hungarian crusader army crossed the Danube and took Niš and Sofia; in 1444 the Battle of Varna would follow. Hüsameddin does not give the cause of death, and Üveys Bey's name does not appear in the sources read in connection with these events; no link can therefore be drawn between his death and these wars.
