Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • meşâhîr-i ümerâ: famous emirs
  • emîr (Geldiklân emîri): the military and administrative ruler of a subdistrict
  • devâtdâr: the inkwell bearer; the palace official who handled seal and writing affairs
  • emâret: emirate, the period of rule

The Time of Hacı Şadgeldi and Geldiklan

Hacı Şadgeldi, to whom Ayık Bay was attached, ruled the city as Emir of Amasya from 1359 to 1381 and ran Amasya like an independent principality as the Eretnid state was breaking up. The emirate of Geldiklan is a subordinate post within this administration. Geldiklan is the name of a subdistrict west of Amasya and in Ottoman records includes villages such as Şeyhli, Çakır and İnözü.

The identity of "Çelebi Ahmed Pasha-yı Devâtdâr" in the entry could not be determined in this research. It is known that after Şadgeldi's death (1381) his son Ahmed defended the city against Kadı Burhâneddin; whether the Ahmed Pasha in the text is the same person cannot be supported by the sources.

No information on Ayık Bay and Kaya Bey was found in other sources.
