Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın büyük mahdûmu olup 759 senesinde ikinci def'a Amasya emîri oldu. Torumtayzâde Süleyman Bey ile Sunkur Beyzâde Süleyman Bey Amasya vilâyetinin idâresine vaz'-ı yed ederek Ahmed Şâh'a vekâlet etmekde idiler.

İbni Kürd ile Hâce Ali kendisinden mütevehhim olup sû'-i kasda kıyâm etdiler. [61] Muhammed Bey sû'-i kasdı duyup kaçdı. Karamânoğlu Süleyman Bey'e ilticâ etdi".

Karamânoğlu Emîr Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Bey, Eretna memâlikini istîlâya bir vesîle olur ümîdiyle Muhammed Bey'i ikrâm ve izzetle kabûl etdi. Fakat Konya vâlîsi olan birâderi Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey bu kabûlü muvâfık görmedi. Çünkü Muhammed Bey'in yüzünden Karamânîler çok ziyân görmüşlerdi.

Bununla beraber Karamânoğlu Süleyman Bey, Eretna memâlikini istîlâ sevdâsına düşdü. Tedârik eylediği askerini Alâ'eddîn Bey'in idâresine verip Kayseriyye ve Sivas üzerine gönderdi. Buraları suhûletle elde edeceğini ümîd ediyordu.

Lâkin Hacı Kutlu Şâh müdebbir, umûr-ı harbe vâkıf, zâbit bir zât idi. Karamânîler'in harekâtını tarassud edib teşebbüsâtına vâkıf oldukda büyük mahdûmu Ahmed Şâh'ı Sivas'a celb edib diğer mahdûmu Şâdgeldi Pâdişâh'ı Amasya emâretine nasb etdi.

In Modern English

He was the eldest son of Hacı Kutlu Şâh. In 759 [1358-59] he became emir of Amasya for the second time. Torumtayzâde Süleyman Bey and Sunkur Beyzâde Süleyman Bey had taken over the administration of the province of Amasya and were acting as deputies in Ahmed Şâh's name.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh became still stronger after taking Amasya and Tokat. He had resolved to attack the Karamanids again. But Eretna Hânzâde Muhammed Bey, gathering again the youths he was inclined to and sinking into his old debauchery, had begun to talk big against Hacı Kutlu Şâh and Hâce Alî Şâh in drinking gatherings and had angered both badly.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh and Alî Şâh tried to dissuade Muhammed Bey from this debauchery. Seeing no possibility of it, they had resolved to remove him and put his brother in his place. The moment Muhammed Bey learned of their decision and intention, he fled and took refuge with Süleyman Bey, ruler of Karaman. Ca'fer Bey too sat on the throne of the emirate for the third time (760 [1359-60]).

Müneccimbaşı el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi says in his work "Câmiu'd-Düvel": "After Muhammed Bey became emir again through Hacı Kutlu Şâh's influence and knowledge, he returned to his former levity and debauchery. Ibn Kürd and Hâce Ali, suspicious of him, undertook an evil design. Muhammed Bey, hearing of this evil design, fled. He took refuge with Karamanoğlu Süleyman Bey."

Karamanoğlu Emîr Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Bey, hoping it would be an occasion to occupy the Eretnid lands, received Muhammed Bey with honor and respect. But his brother Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey, governor of Konya, did not find this reception fitting. For the Karamanids had suffered great harm because of Muhammed Bey.

Nevertheless Karamanoğlu Süleyman Bey fell to the desire to occupy the Eretnid lands. Giving the army he had prepared to Alâ'eddîn Bey's command, he sent it against Kayseri and Sivas. He hoped to seize these places easily.

But Hacı Kutlu Şâh was a prudent man who knew the business of war, orderly and meticulous. When, watching the Karamanids' movements, he learned of their initiatives, he summoned his eldest son Ahmed Şâh to Sivas and appointed his other son Şâdgeldi Pâdişâh to the emirate of Amasya.

The Passage from Ahmed Şah to Şadgeldi

The sequence in the text is set up similarly in present-day accounts. In an English-language encyclopedia entry, relying on Hüsameddin and Uzunçarşılı, when Hacı Kutlu Şah set out to fight the Karamanoğulları, he appointed Şadgeldi emir of Amasya in August-September 1359 and called his eldest son Ahmed Şah, previously emir of Amasya, to his side to govern Sivas. This agrees with Hüsameddin's account of Ahmed Şah, who became emir of Amasya for the second time in 759, and then of Şadgeldi.

Muhammed Bey's Flight

The flight Hüsameddin relates for the Eretnid ruler Muhammed Bey differs from the order in Kemal Göde's entry on the Eretnaoğulları. The entry writes that, because of his young age and lack of resolve, Mehmed Bey left the throne in 1354 and took refuge with the Karamanoğulları, that Cafer Bey was put on the throne, and that Mehmed Bey in April 1355 defeated his brother at Yalnızgöz and took back the throne. Hüsameddin, however, relates Mehmed Bey's taking refuge in Karaman as 760 [1359-60]. I could not find an additional source on whether we can count these two accounts as different datings of the same event. In both accounts it is seen that those around Mehmed Bey were not content with his rule.

The Karaman Front

In Faruk Sümer's entry on the Karamanoğulları it is written that Karamanoğlu Süleyman Bey was killed by his relatives in 762 [1361]. This does not contradict Hüsameddin's still showing Süleyman Bey at the head of the country in the events of 760.
