Amasya ümerâsından Halifet Gâzi oğullarından Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey bin Celâleddîn Muhammed Bey bin Şücâ'eddîn Tekur Sinan Bey'in mahdûmudur. Hacı [55] Kutlu Şâh'ın mağlûb olması üzerine beylerbeyi Şâdgeldi Bey'i ber-taraf edib 757 senesinde Amasya emîri oldu. Seksenlik bir pîr-i fânî olan Sultân Altunbaş'ı Simre çiftliğine i'âde etdi.
Kayseriyye'den Sivas'a gelen Hâce Alî Şâh'ı celb ve tatyîb ve Kayseriyye'de hükûmet eden Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey'i te'mîn ederek onları Karamânîler'in aleyhine tahrîk eyledi.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, cem' ve tedârik etdiği tâze kuvvetlerle yeniden bir [56] ordu tertîb etdi. Bir tarafdan Kayseriyye hâkimi Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey Lârende ve diğer tarafdan Hacı Kutlu Şâh Konya üzerlerine yürüdüler. Karamânîler'i iki tarafdan fenâ sıkışdırdılar.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, Konya vâlîsi Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey'i kanlı muhârebelerden sonra mağlûb edib Konya'dan çıkardı. Onu firâra mecbûr edib Konya'yı ikinci def'a zabt etdi. Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey de merkez-i hükûmet olan Lârende şehrini tazyîk etmekde idi.
Karamânoğlu Süleyman Bey, en ziyâde kendisine karşı nakz-i ahd eden Muhammed Bey'e kızıyordu. Sonunda Süleyman ve birâderi Alî Beyler galebe edib Muhammed Bey'i fenâ hâlde bozdular.
Muhammed Bey'in bu hezîmetini haber alan birâderi İzzeddîn Ca'fer Bey de Samgarlu Hızır ve Tâc Kızıloğlu Hayreddîn Beyler'le birleşip Kayseriyye'yi zabt etdi. Dulkadiroğlu Halîl Bey bin Karaca Bey de Ca'fer Bey'e mu'în olduğundan zâten intizâmı ve kuvve-i ma'neviyyesi bozulmuş olan Muhammed Bey'in askeri ilk müsâdemede târumâr oldu. Muhammed Bey de dervîş kıyâfetine girip Sivas'a kaçdı. Bir tekke bucağına sindi.
Karamânoğlu Süleyman ve Alî Beyler, kazandıkları bu muvaffakiyetle tecdîd-i kuvvet ederek Konya'yı kurtarmağa gitdiler. Hacı Kutlu Şâh ile muhârebeler etdiler. Sonunda galebe edib Konya'yı harben aldılar.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, ikinci def'a Konya'dan ric'at edib Sivas'a geldi. Eski nüfûzunu tedrîcen i'âde etdi.
Müneccimbaşı el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi "Câmiu'd-Düvel"inde yine Âl-i Eretna faslında diyor ki: "Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey, Karamânîler harbinden münhezimen firâr edib dervîş kıyâfetinde Sivas'a geldi. Bir zâviyeye gizlendi. Birâderi Ca'fer Bey'in Sivas'da vâlîsi olan İbni Kürt olup Muhammed Bey'in uşşâkından biri idi.
Vâlînin ba'zı havâssı, Muhammed Bey'in kalender kıyâfetinde Sivas'a gelip falan tekkede gizlendiğini vâlî Hacı Kutlu Şâh'a haber verdi. Vâlî tebdîl-i kıyâfetle mütenekkiren o tekkeye gitdi. Muhammed Bey'i gördüğü anda tanıdı. Muhammed Bey'e kendisini bildirdi. Onu alıp ikrâm ve izzetle dâ'ire-i hükûmete getirdi.
Emîr Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey, üçüncü def'a serîr-i ikbâle cülûs ederek Hacı Kutlu Şâh emîrü'l-ümerâ makâmında durdu. Hâce Alî Şâh eski makâmını buldu. Fakat bütün umûr-ı hükûmet Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın re'y ve tedbîrine müfevvaz oldu.
Sultân Tâceddîn Altunbaş, üçüncü def'a hal'ından pek ziyâde müte'essir olmuşdu.
Bunların her biri Amasya havâlîsinde kendilerine tahsîs edilen çiftliklerde oturdular. Şehzâde Mes'ûd oğlu Kılıç Arslan Bey'in Sivas emîri olduğu karîben görülecekdir.
Bu esnâda Amasya kadılığına kibâr-ı ulemâdan Mevlânâ Pîr Nizâmeddîn Mahmûd bin Muhammed el-Cürcânî nasb edildi. Çünkü İmâd Çelebi tarafından mahdûmu diğer Nizâmeddîn Mahmûd Çelebi Amasya nâibi idi. Mevlânâ İmâd'ın vefâtıyla Amasya kadılığı münhal olmuşdu.⁴⁹¹
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, hemşehrîsi olan Hâce Alî Şâh ile birleşdi. Bunların tedbîr ve mu'âvenetiyle Muhammed Bey, birâderi Ca'fer Bey'i ber-taraf edib Kayseriyye vilâyetini aldı.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, kendi oğlu Şâdgeldi Bey'e revâ görülen mu'âmele-i sâbıkadan pek müte'essirdi.
Binâ'en-aleyh Hacı Kutlu Şâh, Amasya ve Tokat'da olan tarafdârlarıyla bi'l-muhâbere büyük mahdûmu Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Şâh'ı bir kuvve-i kâfiye ile Tokat'a gönderdi. Ahmed Şâh Tokat'a tekarrub etdikde Kâbilîzâde Celâleddîn Muhammed Bey bütün kuvvetiyle Ahmed Şâh'ı istikbâl edib Tokat'a suhûletle indirdi.
Amasya emîri Süleyman Bey, Ahmed Şâh'a karşı harb edecek kadar kavî değildi. Bu sebebden Ahmed Şâh, suhûletle Amasya'yı zabt ederek Amasya emîri oldu. [60]
In Modern English
Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Bey, among the sons of Halifet Gâzi, one of the emirs of Amasya, was the son of Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey. Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey was the son of Celâleddîn Muhammed Bey, who in turn was the son of Şücâ'eddîn Tekur Sinan Bey. After Hacı Kutlu Şâh's defeat, Süleyman Bey removed the beylerbeyi Şâdgeldi Bey and in 757 [1356-57] became emir of Amasya. He sent Sultan Altunbaş, an old man of eighty, back to the Simre farm. Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed Cevherî again became head of financial affairs (müstevfî).
For Altunbaş's sultanate consisted of an empty show and title. Neither the people nor the emirs attached importance to such empty titles. Şâdgeldi Pâdişâh, the beylerbeyi, on the other hand, had made himself loved by the people through his knowledge, culture, fine character and good administration.
It is noteworthy that upon this change the treasurer Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed Cevherî endowed the Yavru farm and his other properties for the expenses of the tomb he had built for himself in Amasya. Şeyh Sadreddîn Elvân Çelebi, of the Âşık Paşazâde, in 757 endowed all his properties for the expenses of the mosque, lodge, school, soup kitchen, bath and tomb he had built on his farm. For Hâce Ali Şâh, his brother Halîl Bey and these were relatives of one another, since they descended from İlyâs Horasânî.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, learning of the events in Amasya and Tokat, was obliged until a suitable time to accept and confirm the emirates of Süleyman and İbrâhim Beys. He drew Hâce Alî Şâh, who had come from Kayseri to Sivas, to his side and won his heart, and by giving assurance to Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey, who ruled in Kayseri, incited the two against the Karamanids.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh organized an army again with the fresh forces he had gathered and prepared. On one side Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey, ruler of Kayseri, marched on Lârende, and on the other Hacı Kutlu Şâh marched on Konya. They pressed the Karamanids badly from two sides.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh, after bloody battles, defeated Alâ'eddîn Alî Bey, governor of Konya, and drove him out of Konya. Forcing him to flee, he seized Konya a second time. Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey was also pressing the city of Lârende, the administrative center.
Karamanoğlu Süleyman Bey was angry most of all at Muhammed Bey, who had broken the agreement against him. For this reason he gathered all his strength and first fought Muhammed Bey. In the end Süleyman and his brother Alî Beys prevailed and routed Muhammed Bey badly.
Hearing of Muhammed Bey's defeat, his brother İzzeddîn Ca'fer Bey too, uniting with Samgarlu Hızır and Tâc Kızıloğlu Hayreddîn Beys, seized Kayseri. Since Dulkadiroğlu Halîl Bey, son of Karaca Bey, also helped Ca'fer Bey, Muhammed Bey's army, whose order and morale were already broken, was shattered in the first clash. Muhammed Bey disguised himself as a dervish and fled to Sivas. He took shelter in the corner of a lodge.
Karamanoğlu Süleyman and Alî Beys, renewing their strength with this success, went to rescue Konya. They fought Hacı Kutlu Şâh. In the end they won and took Konya by war.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh withdrew from Konya a second time and came to Sivas. As governor under İzzeddîn Ca'fer Bey, who for the second time was emir at Kayseri, he began, as before, to arrange administrative affairs in Sivas. He slowly regained his former influence.
Müneccimbaşı el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi again says in the Eretna Oğulları section of his work "Câmiu'd-Düvel": "Eretnazâde Muhammed Bey, defeated in the war with the Karamanids, fled and came to Sivas in dervish disguise. He hid in a lodge. Ibn Kürt, governor of Sivas for his brother Ca'fer Bey, was one of Muhammed Bey's admirers.
Some of the governor's close men informed the governor Hacı Kutlu Şâh that Muhammed Bey had come to Sivas in qalandar disguise and was hiding in such-and-such lodge. The governor, changing his clothes, went unrecognized to that lodge. The moment he saw Muhammed Bey he recognized him. He made himself known to Muhammed Bey. Taking him, he brought him to the government office with honor and respect. Seating him on the throne of the emirate, he also summoned Hâce Ali Şâh, won his heart and returned his vizierate to him."
Emîr Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey sat on the throne of state for the third time. Hacı Kutlu Şâh stood in the position of emir of the emirs. Hâce Alî Şâh found his former position. But all the affairs of government were left to Hacı Kutlu Şâh's view and care.
Sultan Tâceddîn Altunbaş was greatly affected by his being deposed for the third time. When he returned to his farm he fell ill from the grief he felt. Though he was a mortal old man past seventy, he died a few months later. He was buried in the place famed to this day as "Gâzi Çelebi Grave" in the village of Şeyh Savcı, his farm (758 [1357-58]).
Four princes of Sultan Altunbaş were very famed: Mes'ûd, Alp Arslan, Keykubâd, Keyhusrev. Each of them lived on the farms allotted to them around Amasya. That Kılıç Arslan Bey, son of Prince Mes'ûd, was emir of Sivas will be seen soon.
At this time Mevlânâ Pîr Nizâmeddîn Mahmûd bin Muhammed el-Cürcânî, one of the great scholars, was appointed to the judgeship of Amasya. For by İmâd Çelebi's appointment, the other Nizâmeddîn Mahmûd Çelebi, his son, was deputy of Amasya. With the death of Mevlânâ İmâd the judgeship of Amasya had fallen vacant.
Hacı Kutlu Şâh united with his fellow townsman Hâce Alî Şâh. With their care and help Muhammed Bey set aside his brother Ca'fer Bey and took the province of Kayseri. The beys of Amasya were divided into two groups. One party were the partisans of Halifetzâde Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Bey, emir of Amasya. The Pervâne and Gül Beyoğulları held to this side. Yağmuroğlu Sârımeddîn İbrâhim Bey also followed Süleyman Bey.
The second group were Hacı Kutlu Şâh's partisans. At their head Torumtayoğlu Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Çelebi was famed. His son Muhammed Çelebi and the Sunkur and Biçaroğulları also held to this side.
The beys of Tokat likewise had become two factions. One faction held to the side of Tuli Beyzâde Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey, emir of Tokat, the other to Hacı Kutlu Şâh. At the head of those who loved Hacı Kutlu Şâh was Kavulluoğlu Celâleddîn Muhammed Bey. His tribe and helpers were many. His tribe was called "Kavullu". He was famed as Kâbilîzâde.
Süleyman Bey, emir of Amasya, was allied with İbrâhim Bey, emir of Tokat. Both were attached to Eretna Khan's son Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey. Hacı Kutlu Şâh was greatly grieved at the treatment previously given his own son Şâdgeldi Bey.
Thereupon Hacı Kutlu Şâh, corresponding with his partisans in Amasya and Tokat, sent his eldest son Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Şâh to Tokat with a sufficient force. When Ahmed Şâh approached Tokat, Kâbilîzâde Celâleddîn Muhammed Bey met Ahmed Şâh with all his force and easily brought him into Tokat. He himself became emir of Tokat.
Ahmed Şâh, adding the force he received from the emir of Tokat to his own, marched more boldly toward Amasya. Süleyman Bey, emir of Amasya, was not strong enough to fight Ahmed Şâh. For this reason Ahmed Şâh easily seized Amasya and became emir of Amasya.

Altunbaş's Age and End
In the text Altunbaş is first called an old man "of eighty" and a few paragraphs later an old man "past seventy". Hüsameddin has left these two expressions side by side. Doğan Koşan's article places Altunbaş's death in 1356-57 and shows his grave in Umurbey Village of Havza, attached to Amasya. Hüsameddin gives 758 [1357-58] and reports the grave as "Gâzi Çelebi Grave" in the village of Şeyh Savcı. The two accounts are close in date; the burial place is named by different names. According to Koşan the Taceddin Tomb in the center of Amasya was probably built in his name after the sultan's death.
The Waqfs and Elvân Çelebi
The waqf transactions fall in the same year as the change of power. The treasurer Cevherî and Elvân Çelebi endowed all their properties in the year Süleyman Bey came to power. Hüsameddin ties this to their being of the same lineage as Hâce Ali Şâh and his brother Halîl Bey, that is, descendants of İlyâs Horasânî. The place that appears in this section as "the mosque and lodge he built on his farm" took, according to Hüsameddin's own footnote, the name Elvân Çelebi Village and became a nahiye center. In Metin Hakverdioğlu's study compiling Hüsameddin's account of Elvân Çelebi, it is written that Elvân Çelebi Village is a small settlement on the Mecitözü highway between Amasya and Çorum and took its name from the scholar and poet who lies there. In the section relayed in the same study from Hüsameddin's first volume, it is stated that the mosque, tomb, lodge, soup kitchen and bath were built in 753 [1352] and that Eretna's vizier Alâeddin Ali Şah helped in founding the waqf because he was Elvân Çelebi's cousin. In this volume of Hüsameddin, however, the waqf is dated 757; there may be two separate transactions, or the difference in date may point to an error; I could not resolve this.
The Comings and Goings Among Kayseri, Sivas and Konya
In this section Konya and Kayseri change hands repeatedly. According to Kemal Göde's entry on the Eretnaoğulları, the Eretnid ruler Mehmed Bey's taking refuge with the Karamanoğulları in 1354 and Cafer Bey's being put on the throne, and Mehmed Bey's retaking the throne in 1355 through the Battle of Yalnızgöz, are the known frame of this turbulence. The details Hüsameddin gives, that is, Mehmed Bey's taking refuge in a lodge in Sivas in dervish disguise and Hacı Kutlu Şâh's finding him, are relayed from Müneccimbaşı Ahmed Efendi's Câmiu'd-Düvel. Hüsameddin objects to this account in a footnote: Müneccimbaşı says that through Hacı Kutlu Şâh's and Hâce Ali's care Mehmed Bey defeated and killed his brother Cafer. Hüsameddin refutes this claim, stating that it is established by a waqf deed that Cafer Bey was alive in 788 [1386-87].
The Judgeship of Amasya
Pîr Nizâmeddîn el-Cürcânî is also mentioned in an article on Cemâleddin el-Aksarâyî. According to Mustafa Karabacak's study, when the kadiasker of Amasya, Pîr Nizâmeddin Muhammed Cürcânî, died in 768 [1366-67], Hacı Şadgeldi brought Aksarâyî in his place. This record does not contradict the appointment in 758 that Hüsameddin gives. But in the article the person's name is "Muhammed", while in Hüsameddin it is "Mahmûd bin Muhammed".
The Name Halifet Gazi
The madrasa and tomb bearing the name Halifet Gazi in Amasya are, according to the entry in the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi, a complex understood from its inscription to have been built in 606 [1209-10]. No source was found establishing a connection between the madrasa and the Halifet Gazi sons in this section.
