Cemâleddin Aksarâyî

This entry is a cross-reference record; the real information is in Hüsameddin's entry on Cemâleddin İbrâhim Aksarâyî given below. The Dürer-i Kâmine mentioned is the biographical work (tabaqat) of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani on the scholars of the eighth century AH (the fourteenth century).

In encyclopedias Cemâleddin Aksarâyî is presented as a scholar of Aksaray who made a name in the religious, literary and rational sciences in the time of Murad I. He served as müderris at the Zincirli Madrasa in Aksaray and wrote works in the fields of Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, jurisprudence, ethics, literature and medicine; Molla Fenârî, regarded as the first şeyhülislam of the Ottomans, is among his students. His death date is given in the sources as 791 [1388-89]; some researchers say 1377 or 1388. In the same entry his name is recorded as "Mehmed," and it is stated that his lineage reaches Fakhr al-Din al-Razi in the fourth generation. Hüsameddin, however, relying on the Dürer-i Kâmine, says "son of Ali, son of İlyas"; that is, the name and father's name given do not match the encyclopedia record.

On his link with Amasya, in the abstract of a study the name of Cemâleddin Aksarâyî is mentioned among the teachers from whom the Emir of Amasya, Hacı Şadgeldi, learned. This information could not be separately verified in this research.
