The Janissary Serdarship and the Serdengeçtis

Serdengeçti is a term used for the units that fought at the very front in battles. This name, first given to volunteers among the raiders (akıncı), was later also given to Janissaries who plunged into enemy lines or entered besieged fortresses. Those who commanded the serdengeçtis, or those who came out of a fight alive, were called "serdengeçti agha"; the sources state that the pay of these soldiers was raised and that they gained the right to wear a special headdress adorned with valuable feathers. The kır serdarı is the person charged with ensuring the safety of the roads between cities. Ebuloğlu İbrâhim Agha's path from the serdarship of Amasya to the aghaship of the serdengeçtis, and from there to the kır serdarship, shows an Amasya career rising through the Janissary command ranks in the provinces.

Kuloğlu İbrâhim Agha

Kuloğlu İbrâhim Agha son of Halîl Agha, named at the end of the entry, is the person referred to in entry 109 as "İbrâhim Agha son of Halîl Agha of Amasya"; the same offices of sipahi, steward of the silver mine and voivode of Merzifon are listed there too. Whereas here it says "He died after this date," in entry 109 the date of death is given as close to the year 1041. The two dates do not agree; which is correct cannot be understood from the text. It is also possible that this person is the same as Halîl Beyzâde İbrâhim Agha in the Kuloğulları family in entry 103, but this is a conjecture. No information was found in other sources about Kadızâde Mehmed Efendi.
