Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Amasyalıdır. Hâce-i Sultânî Amasyalı Ömer Efendi’nin hemşîrezâdesi olan Hâcegân-ı dîvân-ı hümâyûndan Kara Kadı-[101] zâde Mustafa Efendi bin İbrâhim Efendi bin Kara Kadı Hayreddîn Efendi mahdûmudur. İstanbul’da terbiye görüp sipâhiler zümresine iltihak etdi. Pederinin sâye-i ikbâlinde ricâlden Şâmîzâde Mehmed Efendi’ye dâmâd ve riyâsetinde kethüdâsı oldu.

In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of the sister of Ömer Efendi of Amasya, the sultan's tutor. He was the son of Kara Kadızâde Mustafa Efendi, one of the tutors of the imperial divan; Mustafa Efendi was the son of İbrâhim Efendi, and İbrâhim Efendi the son of Kara Kadı Hayreddîn Efendi. He was raised in Istanbul and joined the body of the sipahis. Thanks to his father's influence he became son-in-law to Şâmîzâde Mehmed Efendi, one of the statesmen, and became his kethüda during the latter's headship (riyâset).

In return for the help his father-in-law had given before the grand vizierate of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, he became under that grand vizier agha of the sipahis, and in Muharram 1070 [1659] governor of Nicopolis with the rank of beylerbey of Rumeli, and in Safar 1071 [1660], with the vizierate, guardian of Nicopolis and its surroundings.

However, his father-in-law, who under the grand vizierate of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha was reisülküttap with the rank of Rumeli, had sent from the army a letter to Sultan Mehmed Han IV, speaking of the grand vizier's youth and his incompetence in running the army, with the aim of bringing his own son-in-law to the office of grand vizier.

Sultan Mehmed IV sent this letter to the grand vizier and informed him that he was free in all his affairs; so at the beginning of 1074 [1663] he was executed together with his father-in-law. Because of this audacity of Şâmîzâde, İbrâhim Pasha's cousins Mehmed Pasha and Veli Pasha of Amasya were also executed, and the goods and property of all of them were confiscated. His son Mustafa Bey also died a few years later.

The End of Two Sons-in-Law in 1663

Şâmîzâde Mehmed Efendi was a reisülküttap close to the rise of the Köprülü family but who in the end entered a power struggle against them. A recent study examines his attempt to bring his son-in-law Kadızâde İbrâhim to the grand vizierate as the reason for his being killed by Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, whom he considered "a loyal friend of his own father." Kadızâde İbrâhim Pasha, while guardian of Nicopolis, and Şâmîzâde, while reisülküttap with the rank of Rumeli, were executed in the camp. Şâmîzâde's wealth can be traced through the confiscation records; his mansion passed to the Köprülüs. The date of execution that Hüsameddin gives as the beginning of 1074 agrees with the date 1074/1663 in the sources.

Family Ties

İbrâhim Pasha's grandfather İbrâhim Efendi is Karakadızâde İbrâhim Efendi, mentioned in entry 107 of the book. There it is briefly written that the vizier İbrâhim Pasha, Mustafa Efendizâde, was killed in 1074; this entry is his detailed biography. His maternal uncle Ömer Efendi of Amasya was the tutor of Osman II. No detail could be found in another source about the role in this event of the "cousins Mehmed and Veli Pashas" in the text.
