The Surre and Its Steward
The surre is the money and gifts sent from Istanbul each year before the pilgrimage season for the needs of the people of Mecca and Medina. Its regular dispatch began in the time of Sultan Selim I (Yavuz) and continued until the end of the Ottoman Empire. The surre procession was organized by the chief of the harem eunuchs (Darüssaade ağası); preparations began with the appointment of the surre steward, who was responsible for the security of the surre during the journey and for its distribution in the Holy Cities. İbrâhim Agha's appointment to this post in 1075 [1664-65] came after his sipahi, voivode and kethüda posts in Merzifon.
Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha
Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, whom Hüsameddin writes that he served as kethüda, was born in 1634 in the village of Marınca in Merzifon; his father was the timar-holding sipahi Oruç Bey. He served as grand vizier from 3 November 1676 to 15 December 1683, led the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and was executed in Belgrade in the same year. Kara Mustafa Pasha's father is Oruç Bey; the father whom Hüsameddin calls "Nûh Agha son of Mustafa" is different from him, and the tie between the two men of Merzifon, according to the text, consists only of the kethüda service. In what office Kara Mustafa Pasha held while İbrâhim Agha was kethüda cannot be understood from the text. No information about Nûhzâde İbrâhim Agha was found in another source.
